Football, like any other sport, has had its fair share of controversies over the years. Some of these controversies have rocked the sport to its core and sparked debates and discussions around the world. Here are the top five football controversies that have captured the attention of fans, pundits, and the media:

  1. The Hand of God – 1986 World Cup Quarterfinals: Argentina’s Diego Maradona scored one of the most controversial goals in football history. In the 51st minute of the match between Argentina and England, Maradona punched the ball into the net with his left hand. The referee did not see the handball and allowed the goal to stand. Maradona later claimed that the goal was scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.” The goal helped Argentina to a 2-1 victory, and they went on to win the World Cup.
  2. Calciopoli scandal – 2006: The Calciopoli scandal rocked Italian football in 2006. The scandal involved several top Italian clubs, including Juventus, AC Milan, and Lazio. The scandal was centred around allegations of match-fixing and corruption. The Italian Football Federation conducted an investigation, and several clubs were found guilty of match-fixing. Juventus was relegated to Serie B, stripped of their two previous titles and lost a third one. The scandal resulted in a major shakeup of Italian football.
  3. Luis Suarez biting incident – 2014 World Cup: Uruguay’s Luis Suarez is no stranger to controversy, but his bite on Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup took things to a new level. In the 79th minute of the match, Suarez bit Chiellini on the shoulder. The referee did not see the incident, but it was caught on camera. Suarez was later banned for nine international matches and four months of football.
  4. Diego Maradona’s drug use – 1991: Diego Maradona is one of the greatest footballers of all time, but his career was marred by controversy. In 1991, Maradona was suspended for 15 months after failing a drug test for cocaine. Maradona later claimed that he was addicted to drugs and alcohol for years and that his use of drugs had affected his football career.
  5. Qatar 2022 World Cup – controversy around hosting: The decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar has been one of the most controversial decisions in football history. The decision has been marred by allegations of corruption, human rights violations, and the unsuitability of Qatar’s climate for a summer tournament. The decision has led to calls for the World Cup to be moved to another country or for it to be held during the winter months.

These are just a few examples of the many controversies that have rocked the football world over the years. While these controversies have been damaging to the sport, they have also sparked important conversations about the integrity of the game and the need for greater transparency and accountability.
