However, it has now been revealed by Rishabh Pant that his position as an opener for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2026 season has still not been confirmed. After the six-wicket defeat at the hands of the Delhi Capitals, Pant said of the situation: “It’s a 50-50 situation but I will definitely open the batting.”

Pant opened the batting with Mitchell Marsh in the season’s first match but could only contribute 7 runs before being run out in a rather unfortunate manner.

Match Recap: Early Exit for Pant

Pant’s exit occurred when a straight drive hit by Marsh off the bowling of Mukesh Kumar deflected off the stumps at the non-striker’s end.

Batting Order Shuffle: Key Changes Explained

The move to start with Pant at the top of the order has resulted in some big changes in the batting order:

– Aiden Markram has been moved down to 3

– Nicholas Pooran has moved from his normal one-down position

– Ayush Badoni has been moved up to maintain a left-right balance.

The explanation given by Pant for this strategy was to give the team flexibility during the powerplay and to give opposition bowlers more options when bowling against us.

Pant Explains Tactical Decisions

According to Rishabh Pant, the changing lineups were also a part of a larger tactical adjustment. Pooran can be considered a player to lead the way in terms of middle-overs. Badoni was supposed to be the one to help in times of crisis.

The idea behind the left-right batting combination was to disrupt the bowlers’ rhythm and create different angles for them. Pant admitted that his early dismissal caused a problem for the team because if he stays in, it gives them an opportunity to utilise him and his batting ability as he was a part of either a part of their plans for LSG.

Impact Player Call and Team Strategy

Due to a lack of partnerships, LSG made the decision to insert Shahbaz Ahmed as an Impact Player early in the innings. This was detrimental to using Leg spinner Digvesh Rathi later in the game. He scored 15 not out but bowled 1 over for 16 runs.

Extras and Missed Opportunities Cost LSG

Pant explained how conceding 20 runs more than expected would have dramatically changed LSG’s ability to win. He stated that the bowling required discipline as 140 is a total that can be defended on that surface, and therefore they didn’t take advantage of having reduced D.C. to 26/4 due to the partnership created between Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs of 119 without losing wickets. This partnership ultimately helped D.C. win out the game.
