6 Min Read

In the much-awaited AFG vs HK fixture in the Asia Cup 2025, Afghanistan brought a clinical display to crush Hong Kong by 94 runs. Despite fighting through intense heat and stern Hong Kong bowling resistance, Afghanistan’s score of 188/6 proved too much for their rivals.  Azmatullah Omarzai won the player of the match for his award-winning knock of 53 runs and took 1 wicket.

Azmatullah Omarzai: Afghanistan’s Batting and Ball Hero

It was a blistering 41-degree day, but it was Azmatullah Omarzai who dominated the proceedings in terms of match-winner for Afghanistan. Not only did he record the quickest T20I fifty for Afghanistan, but his all-round brilliance with the ball also sealed the fate of his team.

Omarzai’s incredible 20-ball half-century was a game-changer as he ran through the tail in the latter half, both providing power and poise on a tricky pitch.

Following his pyrotechnic innings, he returned to haunt Hong Kong’s batsmen with the ball, underscoring the enormous chasm between the two teams. His initial contribution to one of two successive run-outs, and an innings that involved several Hong Kong drops, highlighted Afghanistan’s superior cricket abilities.

Sediqullah Atal’s Brilliant Innings: A Promising Prospect for Afghanistan

Sediqullah Atal was another one who impressed for Afghanistan. The 24-year-old opener performed like a mature and elegant player against the Hong Kong bowlers. He got a good beginning to his innings, scoring 26 runs from 17 balls at the end of the powerplay. His true test came as Hong Kong’s spinners slowed down Afghanistan’s run rate.

Despite several opportunities, Atal’s determination made him stand tall, with Hong Kong unable to make the most of their dropped catches. Yasim Murtaza dropped him on 4 off 3 and on 46 off 38. Even after Atal had completed his third T20I fifty, Ehsan Khan spilled a straightforward catch. Atal, on his part, punished Hong Kong with a nicely paced 73 off 52 balls, taking Afghanistan to a competitive score.

Hong Kong’s Bowling Resistance: A Brief Challenge

The Hong Kong bowlers, specifically the spinners, had a dominant time in the middle overs after narrowly getting through the powerplay. Yasim Murtaza and Kinchit Shah had great control during a five-over period from the 10th to the 14th over in which they gave up only 29 runs and took two wickets, which greatly reduced Afghanistan’s run rate. However, while they had some success, it was Azmatullah Omarzai with his destructive batting, who propelled the match forward and kept Afghanistan ahead.

Hong Kong’s Fielding Gap: Missed Chances and Run Outs

Fielding was one area where the Hong Kong team stumbledd. Early in the innings, Anshy Rath was given out caught behind the wicket, although video replays showed that there was a space between the bat and ball.

The unfortunate error, by the umpires, added to an already mounting pressure when Hong Kong lost some early wickets.Rashid Khan’s fielding troubles did not abate as Nizakat Khan was bowled for a golden duck after a hilarious mix-up, the batter being slow to the realization that there was no run.

Two dropped catches in quick succession also gifted Afghanistan more runs. To rub salt into wounds, Azmatullah Omarzai got Kalhan Challu run out off his own bowling, giving the Hong Kong players a reminder of the difference in quality.

Hong Kong’s Batting Woes: A Poor Collapse

Hong Kong’s batting too was dismal, as they were not able to deal with Afghanistan’s quality bowling unit. Only two batsmen were able to score in double figures, and none of them was able to achieve a strike rate of 100. Their score was 63 for 6 at one point, and all they needed to do was bat out the overs. The Hong Kong batsmen could not build partnerships or manage to play wickets that mattered.

The powerplay saw Hong Kong lose four wickets, the second from most wickets lost in the first six overs in the men’s T20 Asia Cup. Afghanistan’s bowlers, headed by Rashid Khan, completed Hong Kong’s innings for 94/9 in 20 overs short of the target by 94 runs.
