At WWE Backlash 2024, Cody Rhodes successfully defended his Undisputed WWE Championship by defeating AJ Styles. This match was highly anticipated as it was advertised as a “first-time ever” showdown between two top wrestlers with a strong history in both WWE and NWA.

They both took turns attacking each other, including Cody mocking AJ for his past Stardust gimmick.

The match continued with many near-falls and reversals. Cody hit AJ Styles with a vertical suplex, but AJ responded with multiple attacks, including driving Cody into the steel chairs outside the ring. As the match progressed, both wrestlers showed signs of exhaustion but kept fighting. Cody hit a Powerslam and a Disaster Kick, but AJ kicked out.

The match reached its climax when both wrestlers were down, and the referee began counting them out. Both men managed to return to the ring at the count of 9. They exchanged punches, and AJ Styles tried his Phenomenal 450 Splash, but Cody kicked out at two. After many more counters and finishers, Cody Rhodes hit AJ Styles with a Cross Rhodes and secured the win to retain his title.
