Alexander Zverev gets an open path at the Canadian Open after top players withdraw

Alexander Zverev has a big opportunity to prove himself again because many top names will not play in the Canadian Open. Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz have taken their names back from the tournament in the past few days. Because of this the tournament draw has become much easier.

When top ten players do not take part in a big tournament like the Canadian Open, it becomes a golden chance for those players who are still trying to reach the top. The top name in this list is Alexander Zverev, who is now officially the number one seed in the tournament.

Canadian Open 2025 looks very different after top players pull out

First, Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament as he was already doubtful due to suspension. Then, Novak Djokovic also announced that he will not play in the Canadian Open. After that, Carlos Alcaraz also pulled out and said he will now focus on the Cincinnati Open.

Apart from them, Jack Draper from Britain has also taken his name back due to injury. Now, four of the top ten players will not play and that gives lower seeded players a good chance to go far in the tournament.

Zverev now has the best chance to improve his form

Alexander Zverev is now officially the number one seed for the Canadian Open 2025. After him, Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Musetti are next in the rankings. The top eight seeds in the tournament are –

  1. Alexander Zverev

  2. Taylor Fritz

  3. Lorenzo Musetti

  4. Ben Shelton

  5. Holger Rune

  6. Andrey Rublev

  7. Frances Tiafoe

  8. Casper Ruud

For Zverev this tournament is not just another chance to win a title. It is also an important moment to prove himself again. When Jannik Sinner got suspended for three months Zverev was world number two and many people thought he could become world number one.

But when he played eight events as the top seed he could win only one. That was the Munich Open which is an ATP 250 level tournament. In other events his performance was either weak or below expectations.

How did Zverev perform as number one seed in past tournaments

Let us look at the events where Zverev was the number one seed but could not get the expected results

Event Tier Performance Opponent or Notes
Argentina Open ATP 250 Quarterfinals Lost to Francisco Cerundolo
Rio Open ATP 500 Quarterfinals Lost to Francisco Comesana
Mexican Open ATP 500 Second round Upset loss to Learner Tien
Indian Wells Masters 1000 Second round Lost to Tallon Griekspoor
Miami Open Masters 1000 Fourth round Lost to Arthur Fils
Monte Carlo Masters Masters 1000 Second round Early exit against Matteo Berrettini
Munich Open ATP 250 Champion Defeated Ben Shelton in the final
Madrid Open Masters 1000 Fourth round Lost again to Francisco Cerundolo

Is this finally Zverev’s moment

The Canadian Open 2025 is both a test and an opportunity for Alexander Zverev. Now that the top players are not playing and he is the number one seed fans and tennis experts have full expectations from him. If he fails again this will become another missed chance in his career. But if he wins this time his comeback story could become a headline in the tennis world.
