Aman Sehrawat Clinches Gold at Zagreb Open, Dominates Men’s 57kg Finals
Aman Sehrawat triumph as he clinches gold at Zagreb Open, showcasing exceptional wrestling prowess. Challenges faced by Indian wrestlers in the 2024 Ranking Series.
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, reigning Asian champion Aman Sehrawat secured the gold medal in the men’s 57kg category at the Zagreb Open wrestling tournament. The summit clash saw Sehrawat overpower China’s Zou Wanhao with a flawless technical superiority (10-0) performance on Wednesday night. This victory marks Sehrawat’s ascent from a bronze medalist last year to a gold medalist in the 2024 edition of the Ranking Series.
Sehrawat’s journey to the gold was marked by exceptional performances, including an 11-0 win against Roberti Dingashvili of Georgia in the semifinals and a quarterfinal triumph over Zane Richards of the USA with a similar margin. His campaign began with an impressive 15-4 victory over Muhammet Karavus of Turkey in the qualification round.
However, the day did not bring medals for Olympian Deepak Punia (86kg) and Yash (74kg), the other two Indian wrestlers competing. Punia faced a setback with a 2-6 loss to Kazakhstan’s Azamat Dauletbekov in the qualification round. Although Dauletbekov progressed to the final, Punia’s chance for the bronze medal via repechage was cut short by a narrow 3-4 loss to Evsem Shvelidze of Georgia.
Yash, in the men’s 74kg category, encountered a tough challenge and was defeated by USA’s Quincy Monday via technical superiority in the round of 16.
It’s important to note that Indian wrestlers participated in the tournament as neutral athletes due to the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India by the United World Wrestling.
