Ruben Amorim Is Considering Not Playing Andre Onana For The Newcastle Game

After the recent mistakes by Andre Onana in the midweek clash with Lyon in the Europa league, Ruben Amorim is considering not playing him for the highly anticipated match with Newcastle on Sunday.

Onana was at fault for both the goals that were conceded by Manchester United during the game. The first one was where he failed to follow the ball’s trajectory from a free-kick which ended inside the goal without any deflection from anybody and the second one was spilled by him in the last minute of the game which led to last minute Lyon equaliser.

Manchester United fans have criticised the Cameroonian goalkeeper for the silly mistakes committed by him throughout the season, making him a scapegoat for many losses.

Onana moved from Inter Milan in 2023 after a stunning season in Italy

He moved from Inter after they reached the UEFA Champions league final of the 2022-23 season and were defeated by Manchester City for the trophy. He had been a pivotal part of the Inter team who used to play out from the back which highlighted his ball playing ability and enhanced his possession based skills.

But since moving to the other side of Manchester, he has been a shadow of himself. He has shown glimpses of his talent and calibre but has failed to produce consistent efforts between the posts.

Matic was asked about Onana’s comments

At a news conference on Wednesday, Matic was asked about Onana’s comments from earlier this week that United were “way better” than French club Lyon.

Serbian Matic, who played for United from 2017-2022, responded: “You know, I respect everyone but to say that then you need to give the answer.

“If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history, you need to take care what you’re talking about.

“If it was [Edwin] Van der Sar, [Peter] Schmeichel or [David] De Gea saying that, then I would question myself. But you need to have cover to say something like that.”

After the war of words, Onana producing such a performance against Lyon has been heavily mocked by users online as they think that he is not good enough to even play for Manchester United.

He is going to have a double whammy effect

Moore, who co-hosts the What’s Your Goal podcast alongside former England midfielder Katie Chapman, says the brain is wired to pay specific attention to risk, threat and mistakes from an “ego, status and reputation point of view”.

“Given the fact he is a goalkeeper at a very famous club and there is a lot of pressure on shoulders anyway within that team, they have had a lot of negative media throughout the year, he is going to have a double whammy effect,” Moore says.
