West Indies power-hitter Andre Russell has officially announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, bringing an end to a thrilling 12-season career. After the Kolkata Knight Riders released him ahead of the 2026 auction, many reports suggested he could join another team such as Chennai Super Kings. Instead, Russell surprised everyone by choosing to step away as a player and return to KKR in a completely new role.

Dre Russ Bids Goodbye as a Player

The beloved all-rounder, known everywhere as “Dre Russ,” revealed his decision in an emotional video shared by Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday. Russell made it clear that even though he will continue playing in other leagues around the world, the IPL chapter of his playing journey has officially closed. But he also reassured fans that he isn’t leaving the KKR family, as he will now take up a coaching role.

Explaining his choice, Andre Russell said he wanted to walk away on his own terms. “When I made this decision, I felt like it was the best decision at this point,” he said. “I don’t want to fade out, I want to leave a legacy behind. It’s best to retire when fans ask ‘why? You still have some more in you. You still could go for a bit longer’ instead of ‘yeah, you should have done it years back.’”

Looking Back at an Incredible Journey

Andre Russell spent 11 of his 12 IPL seasons with the Knight Riders, creating countless unforgettable moments. “I had some amazing times and great memories, hitting sixes, winning games, getting MVPs,” he shared. The days leading up to the auction were tough for him, especially with rumors of him joining other franchises. “When you are going through social media, you keep seeing yourself photoshopped in different jerseys (of other teams). I felt weird to see myself in any colour other than purple & gold and those thoughts kept going through my head, leading me to a few sleepless nights.”

Stepping Into His New Role

Andre Russell said he had long conversations with KKR management about what comes next. His discussions with team CEO Venky Mysore and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan helped shape the next phase of his IPL journey. “There have been a lot of conversations between me and Mr. Venky Mysore and also Mr. Shah Rukh Khan, about another chapter in my IPL journey,” he confirmed, adding that they “have shown me love and respect and have appreciated whatever I’ve been doing on the field. To be in a setup that’s familiar, matters to me a lot.”

Andre Russell then revealed his next move: “So Kolkata, I’ll be back. I’m here to say I will be a part of the KKR support staff as the new Power Coach in 2026,” he announced. The title felt like a perfect match for him. “When I heard that name – ‘Power Coach’, I felt that describes Andre Russell the best, because the power that I possess when I bat, the energy that I show in the field with ball in hand, I can help in any department.”

A Legacy Written in Big Hits and Big Moments

Andre Russell retires with outstanding numbers to his name. He ends his IPL career with 2,651 runs at an incredible strike rate of 174.97, along with 124 wickets. These stats only scratch the surface of the impact he had on the league, the franchise, and fans around the world.

He wrapped up his message with a heartfelt promise to KKR supporters: “So, see you soon. Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo.”

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan took to his social media and paid a heartfelt tribute to Andre Russell, he wrote:

“Thank you for the wonderful memories, Andre. Our Knight in shining armour!!! Your contribution to @KKRiders is one for the books… and here’s to another chapter in your fantastic journey as a sportsman… The power coach – passing down the wisdom, the muscle and of course the power down to our boys in purple and gold… And yes, any other jersey would indeed look weird on you my man… Muscle Russell for life! Love u… on behalf of the team and everyone who loves the sport!!”
