The Spaniard referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz will take charge of the UEFA Champions League final. The UEFA Referees Committee has declared that the 2021 UEFA Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea fixture to be officiated by Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz on Saturday 29 May.
The 44-year-old Spanish referee is an international referee since 2011, and now he will be taking supervision of his first UEFA Champions League final, after serving as the fourth referee at the 2019 final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in Madrid.
Mateu Lahoz has officiated at six matches in the UEFA Champions League this season, including the quarter-final first-leg between Bayern München and Paris Saint-Germain. Also, he has been selected as one of the refs for UEFA EURO 2020.
“At the final, Mateu Lahoz will be assisted by his countrymen Pau Cebrián Devis and Roberto Díaz Pérez del Palomar, with another Spanish, Carlos del Cerro Grande, will be fourth official. The video assistant referee (VAR) role has been assigned to Alejandro José Hernández Hernández (Spain), and he will be accompanied by compatriots Juan Martínez Munuera and Íñigo Prieto López de Cerain. Novelly, the final was set to be played in Istanbul, Turkey, but due to the UK government who kept Turkey on the red list for travel. And because of that, whosoever flies to Istanbul would be required to isolate upon their return to England. Moreover, there have been considerations that the final could shift to Wembley.
