India faced off against Bangladesh in a relatively inconsequential match. It was the final game of the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. Any result wouldn’t have mattered as things stand currently in the tournament. Bangladesh defeated India by 6 runs. Here is the review of the second innings.
Indian batters struggle in powerplay
With the target of 266 runs in front of them, the Indian batters needed a solid start in the powerplay to get ahead in the game. The exact opposite of that happened as skipper Rohit Sharma after scoring three half-centuries in a row was dismissed for a silver duck by debutant, Tanzim Hasan. Tilak Varma came in at number three and had a disappointing outing with the bat. Tilak who was making his debut was dismissed by Tanzim. Tilak left the length delivery on off-side, thinking it would be an out-swinger, but swung back to castle his stumps.
After being put into a spot of bother early in the powerplay, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul steadied the ship. The duo shared a 57-run stand. They were going at a healthy scoring rate but a flurry of dot balls strung together put KL Rahul under a lot of pressure. KL Rahul stepped out for a big heave to release some pressure. The wicketkeeper batter could not get to the pitch of the ball and toe-edged the ball to Shamim Hossain at short mid-wicket. Ishan Kishan looked scratchy during his 15-ball stay at the crease. He could only score five runs before being dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz while playing a switch hit. Amidst all the falling wickets, Shubman completed his half-century and looked at bay against the Bangladeshi bowlers.
Suryakumar Yadav was given a perfect opportunity to prove his mettle in ODI cricket. The T20I maestro has struggled in ODIs, something which he himself has admitted. The Bangladeshi spinners were on top of the Indian batters. Suryakumar decided to employ the sweep shot to counter them. There were multiple occasions where he played the sweep shot and missed the ball and there were times when he made a connection and reaped the rewards. In the end, it was the sweep shot which brought about the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav. He was bowled by Shakib al Hasan while playing a sweep shot.
India in a spot of bother
India were put in a spot of bother when they lost the 5th wicket. They had scored 141 runs in 33 overs which meant that they required 125 runs in 17 overs. Shubman needed some support from his batting partners. Ravindra Jadeja walked in at number 7. Shubman took an aggressive role early on in the partnership, striking two sixes in the 36th over. In the following over, Gill completed 1000 runs in ODI in 2023. Mustafizur Rahman was brought into the attack and quickly made an impact. The left-arm pacer dismissed Jadeja who went for a big heave and missed the ball completely. Tanzim was brought into the attack too. Gill completed his 5th ODI century. Gill once again took the aggressor role. He was dismissed by Mahedi after hitting a six over deep mid-wicket. Gill had scored 121 runs in 133 balls when he was dismissed. Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur shared a 40-run stand for the 8th wicket. Axar and Shardul were dismissed in the penultimate over. Axar scored 42 runs in just 34 balls.
