While tennis players are often recognised for their game, technique and their trophies, they are also honoured for their exemplary conduct, fairness, and professionalism on and off the court.
The ATP Sportsmanship Award recognises such attributes of the players in a particular season.
Nominees for the ATP’s Sportsmanship Award, named after Stefan Edberg since 1996, are determined by an International Tennis Writers’ Association (ITWA) vote; ATP players then vote for a winner from the list of nominees.
The award goes to the player who, throughout the year, conducted himself at the highest level of professionalism and integrity, who competed with his fellow players with the utmost spirit of fairness and who promoted the game through his off-court activities.
The ATP Sportsmanship Award winners list includes multiple-time honorees such as Stefan Edberg, Pat Rafter, Rafael Nadal, and record-holder Roger Federer, reflecting the evolving legacy of sportsmanship across generations in professional tennis.
The award was named ATP Sportsmanship Award from 1997- 1995. In 1996, it was renamed Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award.
