Former Australian cricket captain and World Cup winner, Aaron Finch, has disclosed his retirement from the Big Bash League (BBL) following the current season with Melbourne Renegades.
In an announcement made at Marvel Stadium ahead of the Renegades’ match against the Hobart Hurricanes, the 37-year-old confirmed that this season would mark his farewell in the league.
Reflecting on an extraordinary career in both international and domestic cricket, Aaron Finch expressed his affection for every moment, stating, “There’ve been some real lows but great highs, and I’ve loved every bit of the journey. No moment can compare to winning the BBL title, which for me was very special and something I’ll remember. I’m proud to have played at the one club for the entirety of my career.”

Finch, who led Renegades for nine consecutive seasons from season 2 to 10, stands as the club’s leading scorer with 3311* runs. He is second only to Chris Lynn on the Big Bash League’s all-time runs tally, boasting numerous accolades.
Having taken over the captaincy from current Australian men’s coach Andrew McDonald, Finch’s influence as a leader profoundly impacted the club. This culminated in early 2019 when he steered the Melbourne Renegades to their inaugural BBL title in a gripping final against rivals, the Stars.

Renegades Head Coach David Saker praised Finch’s exceptional contribution, remarking, “Finchy has been an outstanding servant and leader with the Renegades, it’s such a rare feat in the Big Bash to spend your career at the one club. Everything successful with the Renegades, Finchy has had everything to do with it.”
The cricket icon will play his final BBL match at the Melbourne Derby against the Melbourne Stars on January 13 at Marvel Stadium.
Currently ranking as the seventh-highest run-scorer in T20 cricket, Finch has amassed 11,458 runs at 33.70 and a striking rate of 138.21. His highest score of 172 came for Australia against Zimbabwe in 2018.
Having retired from international cricket in February 2023, Finch concludes an illustrious career that saw him stepping away from ODIs in late 2022. A notable highlight was his captaincy, leading Australia to triumph in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
