Bangladesh cricket team scripted history at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur as they registered a commanding 104-run victory over Pakistan in the opening Test of the two-match series on Tuesday, May 12. Pacer Nahid Rana emerged as the match-winner with a brilliant five-wicket haul in the fourth innings as Bangladesh produced a sensational bowling display on the final day.
Earlier in the match, Pakistan captain Shan Masood opted to field first after winning the toss, but the decision failed to deliver the desired results as Bangladesh posted 413 runs in their first innings, which featured an impressive ton from skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto. Pakistan responded with 386 runs, thanks to a debut hundred from Azan Awais. In their second innings, Bangladesh declared at 240/9 to set up the decisive victory.
Bangladesh scripted history with first-ever home Test win against Pakistan
Bangladesh registered their first-ever home Test win against Pakistan. Since the two teams first met in a Test on Bangladeshi soil in 2002, they had faced each other eight times before this match, with Pakistan winning seven and one game ending in a draw.
Earlier, during Bangladesh’s tour of Pakistan in August 2024, they secured a stunning 2-0 Test series sweep – their maiden Test win as well as first-ever series triumph against the Asian giants. With this latest result, Pakistan has now become one of Bangladesh’s most successful opponents in Test cricket alongside the Ireland cricket team, with Bangladesh recording more wins only against Zimbabwe national cricket team and West Indies cricket team.
Notably, Pakistan has now become only the third team after Zimbabwe and Ireland against whom Bangladesh have managed to win three consecutive Test matches.
Bangladesh will aim first-ever home Test series win against Pakistan
Led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh will be keen to register their first-ever home Test series win against Pakistan. If they manage to achieve the feat, Pakistan will become only the third opponent after Zimbabwe national cricket team and West Indies cricket team against whom Bangladesh have won a Test series of two or more matches both at home and away.
The second and final Test of the series is scheduled to start on May 16 in Sylhet.
