La Liga is heating up with only 1 point separating the top 3 teams.
Barcelona won their league match vs Rayo Vallecano to go top of the table with only superior Goal difference separating Barcelona and Real Madrid. Only one point behind sit Atletico Madrid ready to pounce on any slip-up by either of the two.
After a rough December for Barcelona which saw them give up their 9 point lead at the top and struggle against low-block teams, 2025 has been great for the Catalonia side. They are on a 12 match unbeaten streak since the start of the year and by no means look to slow down.
Hansi Flick Era
Since the appointment of Hansi Flick from this season, Barcelona’s football has changed leaps and bounds which has seen them become a high-intensity team who play a high defensive line to catch their opponents offside. The risk that they take in playing such a high line has reaped fruitful rewards for Barcelona as they have demolished most opponents with goals and vertical passing.
Barcelona’s attack is the most lethal across Europe as they have scored more than 110 goals across Europe with Lewandowski leading their tally with 32 goals. Raphinha and Yamal have scored 24 and 11 goals, respectively. This trio has accounted for more than half the goals and they are in no mood to drop their red hot form.
Hansi Flick can be applauded for this change in their attacking mindset as now Barcelona looks more strong, more endurable, more well knit and a better team overall.
Barcelona Vs Rayo Vallecano
With Inigo Martinez’ introduction back in the squad, the defence looked more than stable but the attacking was average in front of the goal. Barcelona won with a slender lead of 1 goal which came through a 28th minute penalty converted by Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona throughout the match failed to create big chances and when they did poor finishing was displayed. Many chances were presented to Raphinha and Yamal but Rayo’s defence and goalkeeper stood adamant. Pedri, once again shone at the heart of the midfield and was running the game at his own will.
Jules Kounde was a surprise omission from the starting lineup as he was not injured or ill but on the bench for the match. Later, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Jules Kounde was late for a pre-match talk by Flick and this was not the first time, so Flick had decided to bench him owing to his irregular time-keeping.
It came as a breather for Kounde as well who had been featuring regularly for Barcelona over the season with continuous contribution in building up and tracking back from the right flank.
Flick’s Army
Flick has always been very strict about his rules and this was not the first time he had taken a drastic decision after a violation of his rules. Flick’s philosophy has always been clear with great emphasis on strength building, rigorous training and discipline.

This win has propelled Barcelona on top of La Liga table for the time-being with Real and Atletico Madrid not far behind. The title race will be an interesting watch now as all the teams would be putting in extra efforts to come out at the top.
