Belgium’s men’s hockey team have been the story of the 2025-26 FIH Pro League season. Known as the Red Lions, Belgium came into this season as one of the favourites, but what they have done has surpassed almost everyone’s expectations. With just one loss in 14 matches all season, they have been the most dominant side in the competition from the very first whistle.

Belgium opened their campaign back in December 2025 in Ireland and has barely looked back since. They have scored 52 goals in 14 matches, the highest of any team in the tournament.

Heading into the final day of the season on June 28, 2026, Belgium sit top of the men’s Pro League table with 36 points. They are 5 points ahead of second-placed England. A win or a draw in their last match gives them the title.

The Red Lions are on the verge of winning the FIH Pro League for the first time and with it, a direct ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Venue 1: DUBLIN, IRELAND

(Sport Ireland Campus, Dates: December 9-14, 2025)

The Pro League season opened in Ireland, where Belgium laid down a massive marker for the rest of the competition.

Match 1 – Belgium vs Germany

This was the very first match of the entire 2025-26 FIH Pro League season. Belgium began it emphatically, dismantling Germany 4-1. It was a clear statement right out of the gate.

Match 2 – Belgium vs England

Belgium dropped points for the first time in an incredibly tight match. The game finished 2-2 after regulation time, but England squeezed past them in the shootout 3-2 to take the bonus point.

Match 3 – Belgium vs Germany

The Red Lions proved the opening match was no fluke. Facing Germany for the second time in Dublin, they mirrored their first performance perfectly, securing another dominant 4-1 victory.

Match 4 – Belgium vs England

Belgium exacted immediate revenge for their match 2 shootout drop. In a physical battle against England to close out the Dublin leg, Belgium’s attack broke through to win 3-2 in regulation time.

Venue 2: ROURKELA, INDIA

(Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium, Dates: February 10-15, 2026)

The tournament shifted to India in February, where Belgium put on an absolute clinic at the largest hockey-specific stadium in the world, sweeping all four games against Argentina and the host nation.

Match 5 – Belgium vs Argentina

Belgium kicked off their Indian leg with a high-scoring 5-3 thriller against Argentina. Belgium’s attack was in full flow, proving too heavy for the South American defensive structure.

Match 6 – India vs Belgium

Belgium beat hosts India 3-1 in front of a packed stadium. Nelson Onana, Thomas Crols, and Arno Van Dessel scored for Belgium, while Shilanand Lakra got India’s only goal. The teams were level 1-1 at half-time, but the Red Lions dominated the final quarter.

Match 7 – Argentina vs Belgium

Match 9 – Belgium vs Pakistan

Belgium showed zero signs of rust after the tournament break, completely overpowering Pakistan in a 7-1 goalfest. Guillaume Hellin was named Player of the Match, and Nelson Onana opened the scoring in the third minute.

Match 10 – Belgium vs Spain

Facing a rigid Spanish side, Belgium put on a tactical masterclass. They choked out Spain’s circle entries and secured a clinical 3-1 win.

Match 11 – Belgium vs Pakistan

Another completely dominant performance against the Pakistani side. Belgium kept a clean sheet while firing six past the keeper to comfortably take all three points.

Match 12 – Belgium vs Spain

Spain pushed Belgium to the absolute limit in a breathtaking match. Belgium’s championship mindset showed through as they dug deep to escape with a tight 3-2 victory in regulation.

Against the defending Pro League champions, the Netherlands, Belgium came from behind to draw 2-2 in full-time and then defeated them 4-3 in a tense shootout to secure the bonus point.

Match 14 – Belgium vs Australia

This was the shock of the Pro League season: Belgium’s first defeat in regulation time all year, falling 2-1. Tom Boon had given Belgium the lead in the 32nd minute, but Australia’s Jack Welch and Nathan Epraums struck back to break the Red Lions’ unbeaten streak.
