Video games are changing fast because of artificial intelligence (AI). Old RPGs gave you fixed chat boxes, the same three answer choices every time. Now some games let characters actually think remember, and react like real people.
In this article we look at ten games where AI is not just a trendy term, it actually changes how you can play.
What Does “AI-Powered RPG” Really Mean?
Not every game that says it has Artificial Intelligence works in the way. Some games just use Artificial Intelligence to make the bad guys move around in a way. Other games use the power of Artificial Intelligence so the characters can have a real conversation with you.
There are four kinds of Artificial Intelligence in games that you should know about.
- Artificial Intelligence Conversation: This is when the characters in the game can talk back to you and they use Artificial Intelligence to understand what you are saying. Mobile Games like Wanderfolk and Suck Up! use this kind of Artificial Intelligence.
- Artificial Intelligence Narrative: This is when Artificial Intelligence makes up the whole story of the game as you play it. Games like AI Dungeon and Hidden Door can create new worlds for you to play in.
- Artificial Intelligence Simulation: This kind of Artificial Intelligence does not use language instead, the characters in the game have memories, needs and relationships that all interact with each other to create surprising stories. Games like Dwarf Fortress and RimWorld use this kind of Artificial Intelligence.
- Artificial Intelligence Enhancement: This is when the game is made in the way but Artificial Intelligence is used to make some small parts of it better like the animations or the voices. The game inZOI uses Artificial Intelligence in this way.
Now let us take a look at the games that use Artificial Intelligence.
1. Wanderfolk
Wanderfolk puts you in a village as a poor wanderer. Each villager is AI-powered and has a memory even after you log out. Want better weapons from the smith? Talk to him often. Win his confidence gradually. Burn that trust and you’re stuck with basic tools while the monsters get tougher each night. Making stuff, jobs, and survival all come down to your ability to talk to people.
2. AI Dungeon
It was one of the first games that showed that AI could run a whole RPG by itself. Pick a genre, and whatever you want to do, and the AI will build the story around it. There is no script to this, no game map. It’s totally free but it gets a little abstract over long stretches without visuals and a lasting memory of the world.
3. Skyrim + Mantella
The world of Skyrim is really cool. It was missing something. People who can have real conversations. The Mantella mod changes this. Now over 2,500 characters in Skyrim can talk to you like a person and they even remember what you talked about before.
You can ask a guard about the war. They will give you their real opinion, not just say the same thing over and over.
To get this to work, you have to put in some effort and get some tools but it is worth it when it is all working. The Skyrim game becomes much better with the Mantella mod.
4. Hidden Door
This is like a game you play on a table. You do not need a person to be in charge. The computer does everything for you. It sets up the scene; it manages the things you find. It can even handle many players all at the same time. The computer remembers what each player does.
You can have one of your characters sneak away while another one of your characters talks to a merchant. The computer can handle both things happening at the time and it does it smoothly.
This is a way for friends to play together when they cannot meet in person all the time.
5. Suck Up!
Think you are a vampire but you don’t have the power of vampire and people don’t want to talk with you. In this game the only thing you can do is talk. You go around knocking on doors for just people to invite you inside of their homes. The people who live in these houses react in ways. It depends on how you talk to them, how sure of yourself you sound and when you say things.
This game is harder because you have to say things out and you cannot change what you say once you have said it. The Vampire game shows that just talking to people can be enough to make a whole role-playing game. You have to be careful what you say to the people the Vampire has to be good at talking to get inside the houses.
6. Dead Meat
This game is a horror role-playing game where saying the wrong thing can get you into trouble. You have to question these intelligent characters when they are under a lot of pressure and you never know what they are going to say back to you. The artificial intelligence characters actually listen to what you say and think about it instead of just choosing a response from a list. This means that every time you play the game, it feels really different. In this game you do not get experience points; you just have to build trust with the intelligence characters or you will lose their trust.
7. Dwarf Fortress
In this game there is help from the computer programme. It has some good stories. Each dwarf has feelings, memories and friendships that affect each other in different ways. A dwarf who loses someone they care about might begin to drink much and stop doing their job, and then the real problem starts for the whole group.
This is not a planned out thing in this game. It just happens because this games works like this. The dwarfs’ actions and feelings are not controlled; they just do what they want. It is like watching a group of people TBH you never know what will happen next. This is the must-try game because when you play it, it is different every time you play.
8. RimWorld
RimWorld has this thing called an AI storyteller. It is like a person who decides what happens to your colony. The AI storyteller looks at how much money you have, how your people are feeling and how many people are in your colony. You can choose a storyteller that’s calm or one that is crazy. This depends on what kind of game you want to play. The people in your colony will become friends with each other. They will not get along. Sometimes they will even get really upset. Have mental breakdowns. All of this is controlled by the AI director. It is like a person behind the scenes who is making all of these things happen to your colony. RimWorld’s AI storyteller does all of this to make your colony’s story interesting.
9. inZOI
The game inZOI is made with Unreal Engine 5. It looks like a version of The Sims but the characters are more intelligent. If you flirt with the person at a party, you will see your social circle fall apart. The artificial intelligence in inZOI does not let you have open conversations like some smaller independent games do. However, ZOI looks very nice. That makes every social moment feel like it is from a movie. The characters and scenes in inZOI look really good, which is what makes the game feel special. InZOI has a lot of polish and that is what makes every social moment feel cinematic.
10. EmemeTown
In this game relationships matter. If you help the baker, people in the town will like you more. If you disturb the mechanic, they will not be very nice to you. The people in the town talk about you when you are not around. So when you come back to the town, they already know what they think about you. This game is great for people who like making friends in games instead than fighting. The game is about relationships and how the baker and the mechanic and all the other characters in the town feel about you.
