The eleventh World Chess Champion was Robert James Fischer (March 9, 1943 – January 17, 2008), an American grandmaster in the game. He was a chess prodigy who at the age of 14 won his first of a record-setting eight US Championships. He was the only player to ever win the competition with a perfect score of 11-0, which he achieved in 1964. Fischer won 6-0 victories in his matches against Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen to qualify for the 1972 World Championship. Fischer defeated Tigran Petrosian in a subsequent qualifying round before defeating Boris Spassky of the USSR in the title match in Reykjavik, Iceland. The game received greater international attention than any other chess tournament before or subsequently because of its promotion as a Cold War showdown between the US and USSR.
