The road to the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 officially enters its decisive phase this week as the 2025–26 IBSF Bobsleigh World Cup launches on 22 November in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Over the next nine weeks, the world’s top bobsleigh athletes will battle for podiums, ranking points, and- most critically- Olympic qualification.
The season opener marks the competitive debut of the newly rebuilt Eugenio Monti track, the venue that will host bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge during the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
Seven Stops, Nine Weeks, One Goal
The 2025–26 World Cup calendar is the most condensed in recent years, packing seven European stops into a demanding nine-week window. After Cortina, the tour proceeds through the continent’s most iconic tracks, including Innsbruck, Lillehammer, Sigulda, Altenberg, Winterberg, and the season finale in St. Moritz, the birthplace of the sport.
Each race carries heightened significance: every heat contributes to the IBSF ranking lists that will ultimately determine who gets to compete at Milano Cortina 2026. The Olympic qualification window, which opened on 1 October 2024, closes on 18 January 2026, just 48 hours after the St. Moritz races conclude.
How Athletes Qualify for Milano Cortina 2026
The path to Olympic eligibility is demanding and designed to ensure both depth of participation and competitive excellence. To qualify, bobsleigh pilots must:
- Compete in at least eight IBSF-ranked races across three different tracks during the qualification period.
- Ensure that at least five of those races occur in the 2025–26 season, on a minimum of two tracks.
- Be ranked within the top 50 (men) or top 40 (women/monobob) on the IBSF Combined Ranking List by 18 January 2026.
Final Olympic quotas will be determined using the IBSF rankings published on that date. These standings are built from each athlete’s best seven results- the total number of World Cup events this season- across the World Cup, Europe Cup, and North American Cup circuits.
Global Qualification, European Focus
Though the World Cup remains the high-profile centerpiece of the qualification process, critical points can also be earned on the North American Cup and Europe Cup circuits. This multi-tiered structure ensures opportunities for developing athletes while maintaining a clear, merit-based pathway to the Games.
Still, with all seven World Cup races staged in Europe this season- and featuring the sport’s deepest competitive fields- most Olympic hopefuls will insist on strong results on the continent to secure their spots.
