Australian captain Steven Smith has announced that his team will include four fast bowlers and a spinner on Boxing Day Test of the series. This will be the second time that the Australian cricket team has opted for the four-fast-bowler attack since the series began. This comes at a time when the Australian cricket team is preparing for a crucial showdown during the series named Ashes 2025/26.
Addressing the gathering on Christmas Day, Smith announced that the pool of probable players had been identified as 12, although the final XI would be decided with a final glance at the pitch.
“We are going to play four seamers and no spinner,” Smith confirmed.
Pitch and Weather Constrain Selection Decisions
It was the first day away from the Test action when the inspection of the pitch proved to be decisive for Australia. It was stated that the wicket had good coverage of grass. It was also described as seam-friendly.
- About 10mm of grass on the pitch
- Green and “quite furry” look
- Cooler, cloudier weather expected
With predicted maximum temperatures of no more than 26°C for the first three days of play, according to Smith, if Lyon had been available, the team would likely still have gone with an all-pace attack. The Adelaide Test, where spin played a bigger role, was described as an exception rather than the norm.
Why Todd Murphy Misses Out
Factors Rather Than Skill in Omitting
Being that Nathan Lyon is also injured, a direct spin substitute for him was naturally Todd Murphy. Nonetheless, Smith explained that Murphy’s team exclusion is purely a tactic.
“This one seems like it could provide a fair bit of help for the seam bowlers,” Smith said.
He further stated that even if Lyon had been fit enough to play, the side would nonetheless have opted for a pace attack. The Adelaide Test was termed an exception rather than the rule when it came to spin action in the match.
Jhye Richardson Back in Ashes Contention
Fast bowler Jhye Richardson has also been included in the squad and definitely has a chance to feature in the Boxing Day Test. Richardson last played a Test in the 2021 Ashes series, where he impressively took five wickets.

“We’re thrilled to have the 29-year-old return.”
- Swings the ball both ways
- Hits the seam regularly
- Add Skiddy Pace and Accuracy
One factor pointed out by Smith as being favorable to Richardson before the 2025/26 Ashes series was the fact that Richardson had a good track record against England.
Cameron Green Receives Support Despite meager Performance
Cameron Green, the all-rounder, has had a low-key series, with 76 runs in four innings and two wickets under his belt. Yet Steven Smith is satisfied with his performances. He praised Green’s bowling timing, fielding prowess, particularly at gully, and percentage of taking good openings to bat on.
“It’s about converting those starts into bigger scores,” Smith said.

Captain Confirms Full Recovery Steven Smith has also confirmed that he is fit after missing the previous Test because of vestibular problems. According to him, the problem went away early in the match at Adelaide but it was still right that he took a rest. “Feeling 100% now,” said Smith, who felt frustrated watching play from the hotel with a batting-friendly pitch being offered.
Australia Trusts Pace Formula in Ashes 2025/26
With a green pitch, good weather, and a quality pace Attack at their command, Australia are going aggressively with the seamers in the Boxing Day Test match.
Under Steven Smith’s leadership, the home side is adjusting quite effectively to the conditions as the Ashes 2025/26 continues to unfurl. “The four-pacer strategy may raise a few eyebrows,” said Kumar Sangakara with a chuckle during the commentary team appearance at the media conference at Lords. “However, for Australia, this strategy has a lot to do
