A routine boxing training session in Himachal Pradesh turned fatal after a young Army commando died during a boxing drill. This is a reminder that even practice sessions in the forces can carry serious risks.

Mohit Kumar, 26, was a paratrooper with the 29 Para unit of the Indian Army and hailed from Faridabad. He was at the Special Forces Training School in Bakloh, Chamba district, where soldiers undergo intensive physical and combat training.

The incident happened on Saturday morning during a scheduled sparring session. According to officials, Mohit was in the ring with another trainee when he took a hard blow to the left side of his head. Such sessions are a normal part of training, meant to build endurance and sharpen close-combat skills, but they can sometimes go wrong despite supervision and safety gear.

What exactly happened during the boxing training?

Those present said Mohit collapsed shortly after the hit. He was immediately taken to a military hospital, where doctors tried to revive him, but he died during treatment. Early indications point to a severe head injury, though the exact cause will be confirmed after a post-mortem.

Police have said there is no suspicion of foul play, and the case is being treated as an accidental death during training. Standard legal formalities are underway, and statements from those involved in the session are expected to be part of the inquiry.

The training facility in Bakloh is known for pushing soldiers to their limits, preparing them for extreme situations they may face in real operations. Boxing and other high-impact drills are used to build toughness and reflexes, but incidents like this show how unpredictable such exercises can be.

Mohit’s death has come as a shock to his unit and his family back home. It’s a stark reminder that for soldiers, the risks don’t begin only on the battlefield they’re present even in training, where they prepare for the job they’ve signed up to do.
