On the historic ground of Lord’s, Jasprit Bumrah once again showed why he is counted among India’s most dangerous fast bowlers. On Day 2, he shook England’s batting line-up with his swing and seam movement. With bowling figures of 5/74, his name was written on the Lord’s honours board, but the main discussion was about his lack of celebration.
He dismissed Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Chris Woakes in the morning session and brought England down from 251/4 to 271/7. This spell turned the whole match in India’s favour. It was his 15th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, and he also broke Kapil Dev’s record for most overseas five-fors by an Indian.
When he took his fifth wicket of Jofra Archer, fans were waiting for his usual fierce celebration. But there was no loud reaction and no smile. Everyone was surprised. Was he unhappy? Or was it because England reached 387 runs?
In the post-match press conference, Bumrah gave the answer himself. “I was tired,” he said calmly. “There was no question of happiness. I had bowled for a long time and sometimes tiredness takes over.”
He also said, “I’m not 21-22 years old now that I’ll jump around for every wicket. I’m not usually very expressive. I was happy that I could contribute, but at that moment I just wanted to go back to my mark and bowl the next ball.”
After being rested for the Edgbaston Test, Bumrah came back at Lord’s and proved again why he is the leader of India’s pace attack. No matter the pitch or conditions, Bumrah always adapts. His spell in the Day 2 session was a perfect mix of pace, angle and accuracy.
He clean bowled Joe Root with a ball that came in at the last moment and hit the middle stump. This was also the 11th time he had dismissed Root in a Test match. This was his second back-to-back five-for in the series and he had also taken one in Leeds.
India ended the day at 145/3, where KL Rahul played a calm and composed knock and stayed not out at 53. On the other side, Rishabh Pant handled the crease despite a finger injury and remained 19 not out.
Yashasvi Jaiswal had a short stay on the pitch, he was out for 13 in Jofra Archer’s comeback spell. Archer returned to Test cricket after four years and struck with his third ball of the match.
Karun Nair played a steady innings of 40, but his innings ended with a brilliant one-handed catch by Joe Root at slips. Shubman Gill, who scored twin centuries at Edgbaston, got out for just 16 in this innings.
Bumrah’s calm reaction was as much a part of his spell as it was a sign of his maturity. He didn’t shout, didn’t show any anger, he just destroyed England like a silent killer. His name is now on the Lord’s honours board, and the cricket world understood once again that Bumrah is not just a bowler, he is a phenomenon.
