The result will have surprised nobody who has watched France build through this tournament. His second was the better goal: Olise threaded a pass through the eye of a needle to release him in behind, and Mbappe swept clinically into the far corner. He was withdrawn with six minutes remaining, his job done.
It Is Not Just Mbappe
France’s depth is what separates them from the other contenders. Michael Olise was exceptional against Sweden, hitting the post with a bicycle kick and providing the assist for Barcola’s goal with a piece of skill that belonged on a different level.
Bradley Barcola has been one of the tournament’s standout performers in a supporting role, and Deschamps has options across every position that most managers at this World Cup can only envy.
