Iran has officially pulled out of the FIFA World Cup amid the country’s war with the United States. Ever since the war started, there have been speculations surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament.

Considering the fact that the Iran side would have had to travel to the United States to play its matches, it seemed to be highly unlikely. The same has now been confirmed as Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali confirmed on Wednesday that their national team will not be sent to North America this summer. The statement read:

“Considering that this corrupt regime [the US] has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup. Our children are not safe, and, fundamentally, such conditions for participation do not exist. Given the malicious actions they have carried out against Iran, they have forced two wars on us over eight or nine months and have killed and martyred thousands of our people. Therefore, we certainly cannot have such a presence.”

The announcement, which comes days after the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has sent FIFA struggling. Moreover, football fans are wondering who will replace Iran in the World Cup 2026? The answer isn’t simple. It involves geopolitics, FIFA’s rulebook, AFC qualification standings, and a window of time that is shrinking by the day.

Can India replace Iran in the FIFA World Cup?

While Indian fans would love to see India get a chance to play in the FIFA World Cup, that dream is far-fetched. As India did not make it to even the final qualification stage of the competition, they will certainly not be allowed to replace Iran.

There are two nations that seem to be the most likely to replace Iran, UAE and Iraq. Iraq is the highest-ranked AFC nation, but not yet confirmed in the draw. However, FIFA could grant them an automatic berth status. As far as the UAE is concerned, they sit directly behind Iraq in the AFC standings and could be preparing emergency documentation for a FIFA submission. Should Iraq’s situation become complicated, the Emirates will step forward immediately. That said, it remains to be seen as to which nation replaces Iran in the competition.
