India won their back-to-back T20 World Cup title in March 2026. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India seized their third T20I World Cup title. But Captain Suryakumar Yadav was out of form from the last 1 year, and he is still out of form during the Indian Premier League 2026. According to media reports, the BCCI decided to remove Surya as a Captain of the Indian team, and earlier they planned to make Shreyas Iyer the new Captain of the Indian team. But now Sanju Samson has also joined him in this race. Team India is going to play the T20I series against Ireland in June.

India’s Focus on White ball Cricket

India are set to tour England and Ireland in June-July for a white-ball assignment, and IPL 2026 performances are expected to play a major role in squad selection. While Suryakumar Yadav has struggled for consistency this season, both Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer have impressed with the bat and are currently among the leading run-scorers in the IPL.

Why Samson Is Ahead In The Race

According to media reports, Sanju Samson currently has an edge over Shreyas Iyer in the race to become India’s next T20I captain. One of the biggest reasons is Samson’s regular involvement in India’s T20 setup over the last two years.

Since the 2024 T20 World Cup, Samson has remained a consistent part of the national side and has delivered impactful performances at the international level. In 62 T20Is, the wicketkeeper-batter has scored 1,399 runs, including three centuries and six fifties. He also played a valuable role during India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign.

Shreyas Iyer will join as a player

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has enjoyed an excellent IPL season with Punjab Kings and has been among the standout batters of the tournament. However, the report points out that Iyer has not featured in India’s T20I side for a long time. His last appearance in the format came on December 3, 2023.

Suryakumar will lead again?

Because of that gap, selectors may feel that handing him both a comeback and the captaincy in the shortest format at the same time could be a major decision, despite his experience and leadership credentials. The report further claims that the BCCI selection committee is still likely to continue with Suryakumar Yadav for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England. But if his poor run continues, the management could be forced to look at other captaincy options going forward.
