Carlos Alcaraz Claims 2025 Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award

3 Min Read

Carlos Alcaraz has been honored with the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for the second time in his career, establishing himself not only as one of tennis’s fiercest competitors, but also as one of its most respected ambassadors.

The World No. 1 , who first won the award in 2023, was selected from a field that included Felix Auger-Aliassime, Grigor Dimitrov, and Casper Ruud. The nominees were chosen by the International Tennis Writers’ Association (ITWA), but for the first time, the winner was determined by the ATP No. 1 Club- a group of 29 current and former World No. 1 players. This shift reflects the ATP’s desire to ensure its highest honor for conduct is decided by those who understand the demands and responsibilities of the sport’s summit.

Carlos Alcaraz: A Champion of Character

The 22-year-old Alcaraz delivered one of the most memorable acts of sportsmanship of the year at Roland Garros, during a fourth-round clash with Ben Shelton. After appearing to hit a clean volley winner, Alcaraz immediately informed the umpire that he had lost control of his racquet mid-stretch, making contact with the ball while the racquet was no longer in his hand- an illegal shot. The point, originally awarded to him, was rightfully given to Shelton.

“I would have felt guilty if I didn’t say anything about it,” Alcaraz said after the match, embodying the integrity for which this award stands.

A Season of Dominance

Carlos Alcaraz’s behavior off and on the court was matched only by his performance between the lines. The Spaniard ended the year as ATP Year-End No. 1, lifting eight titles including two majors, and posting a 71–9 record, the highest win tally of the season according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Already a six-time major champion, he has continued to elevate his legacy, showcasing both excellence and humility week after week.

The young star has been active on the exhibition circuit in December and is now preparing for a push to complete the career Grand Slam with a maiden Australian Open title next month.
