Carlos Alcaraz’s Father Blamed For Split With Coach Juan Carlos Ferrero

4 Min Read

The shock split between Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero has continued to send ripples through the tennis world, with former World No. 1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov delivering a blunt assessment of what went wrong in one of the most successful player–coach partnerships of recent times.

Alcaraz and Ferrero officially parted ways in December 2025, ending a seven-year collaboration that produced extraordinary success. Under Ferrero’s guidance, Alcaraz won six Grand Slam titles, eight ATP Masters 1000 trophies, two year-end World No. 1 finishes, and established himself as the defining player of his generation.

While the split initially came as a surprise, Kafelnikov believes it was neither sudden nor driven by the player himself.

“Why would you end such a successful collaboration?” Kafelnikov said. “They were winning Slams, they were number one in the world. I’m sure this decision was not made by Carlos alone.”

Clash of Standards and Distractions

According to Kafelnikov, Ferrero’s high standards of professionalism may have clashed with the realities of Alcaraz’s growing fame. The former Olympic champion described Ferrero as a demanding perfectionist, both as a player and a coach, and suggested that external distractions may have complicated the working relationship.

“With Carlos being Spanish, very young, and attracted to all the off-court temptations that come with success, it must have been hard to deal with him lately,” Kafelnikov said. “Juan Carlos wants absolute commitment, and not everyone can handle that at 22.”

Kafelnikov emphasized that such challenges are understandable for a young global star but suggested Ferrero may have attempted to shield his player from the noise surrounding him- a move that could have triggered internal conflict.

Carlos Alcaraz’s Father’s Role Under Scrutiny

The strongest criticism from Kafelnikov was reserved for alleged parental involvement, particularly that of Alcaraz’s father, Carlos Alcaraz Senior. The Russian claimed he had heard of a serious dispute between Ferrero and the player’s father and believes that interference from parents can damage even the most successful partnerships.

“The biggest mistake is when parents interfere in the process,” Kafelnikov said. “Carlos is a grown man. He should be making these decisions himself.”

Drawing from his own career, Kafelnikov explained that his family never interfered with coaching choices, finances, or scheduling- a boundary he feels is essential for elite success. He warned that when parents become involved in contracts, coaching decisions, or day-to-day management, the consequences are often negative for the player.

Contract Dispute and Aftermath

Ferrero later confirmed that contractual disagreements with Carlos Alcaraz’s management team were a key factor in his decision to step away, adding further weight to suggestions that the split was driven by off-court issues rather than sporting results.

Samuel López has since taken over as Alcaraz’s main coach, though reports indicate that the World No. 1’s team may still add another senior figure to the setup. Kafelnikov advised that any incoming coach should establish firm boundaries regarding parental involvement from the outset.

“They can travel, they can sit in the box,” he said. “But they cannot interfere in the coaching process.”
