Rising tennis sensation Coco Gauff and Alexandra Eala will join forces to compete in the women’s doubles competition at the ongoing Italian Open.

Eala entered the double competition after getting eliminated in the first round of the women’s singles draw in Rome, falling 6-0, 6-1 in straight sets to Marta Kostyuk.

On the other hand, Gauff has a bye into the second round and will play Canadian 18-year-old qualifier Victoria Mboko.

The American and the Filipino duo will enter the double’s competition as wildcards, facing Alexandra Panova and Fanny Stollár in the opening round on Friday (9 May) at the Foro Italico.

While Gauff is currently the world number three, the Filipina player has risen to the career high of No. 70 in the WTA rankings.

While Ela finished as semi-finalist at the recently concluded Miami Open, the American finished as the runner-up at Madrid Open 2025 in single’s.

Gauff has already proven her credentials as a doubles player with nine titles, including the 2024 French Open with two-time Olympic double champion Kateřina Siniaková. She is eyeing a 10th career doubles title and a fourth WTA 1000 triumph at this year’s Italian Open.

The 21-year-old is also a returning doubles finalist in Rome, which she accomplished alongside Erin Routliffe, who is now the tournament top seed alongside Olympic bronze medallist Gabriela ‘Gaby’ Dabrowski.

Earlier, Gauff has successfully teamed with Jessica Pegula and Erin Routliffe in the past.

Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini are the defending champions at Italian Open 2025.
