Critical Champions League Clash Looms as Xavi Addresses Club’s Backing Amid Pressure

Barcelona’s coach, Xavi, discusses club support amid pressure, emphasizing trust with the president and sporting director ahead of a decisive Champions League fixture.

FC Barcelona’s coach, Xavi Hernandez, reaffirmed on Monday that he maintains the full support of the club, despite a string of disappointing performances and results.

Addressing the press ahead of a crucial Champions League fixture against Porto on Tuesday, Xavi acknowledged the urgency following Barcelona’s underwhelming 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano. This match came after a narrow victory against Alaves and a Champions League loss to Shakhtar Donetsk, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming game against Porto.

Although currently leading their group with nine points from four matches, the parity with Porto amplifies the importance of avoiding defeat. A loss would place the team in a precarious position, necessitating a strong performance in their final group match to secure advancement and evade a third consecutive absence from the knockout stage.

Acknowledging the potential implications of further Champions League setbacks on the club’s financial stability, Xavi emphasized his confidence in the support extended by club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco.

“I feel supported in every aspect by the club,” Xavi affirmed when questioned about the mounting pressure. “There is a daily dialogue with the president, and there exists complete trust between us. Additionally, there’s unwavering confidence and camaraderie with Deco.”

Xavi also highlighted the solidarity within his coaching team, stating, “I have the backing of my assistants, who are not just colleagues but also friends—my brother being among them. Furthermore, I feel the support of the players, and I firmly believe things will improve.”
