Mathieu van der Poel took home the men’s elite UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships title for a seventh time on

This was the Dutchman’s three cyclo-cross world titles in a row. The incredible triumph in Lievin, France, moved him clear of his rivals less than three minutes into proceedings. He was 22 seconds ahead at the end of lap one of eight, and 45 seconds clear at midway.

The 30-year-old road race world champion from 2023, was able to ease up in the closing stages and went on to win the final lap.

Van der Poel has now equalled the record for cyclo-cross world titles held by Belgian Erik De Vlaeminck whose seven triumphs came between 1966 and 1973. “It’s a record that was standing for a very very long time,” he told UCI afterwards, “You never imagine that you’ll win seven world titles.”

Belgium’s three-time champion Wout van Aert was 45 seconds behind in second with his Belgian teammate Thibau Nys another 31 seconds adrift.

Two-time Olympian van der Poel will next be seen in road cycling’s UCI World Tour, starting with either the Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico in early March, followed by a potentially blockbuster clash with Tadej Pogacar in the Milan-San Remo.
