The debate surrounding Oleksandr Usyk vs Rico Verhoeven continues to grow, with many combat sports fans believing the GLORY kickboxing champion did far better than expected against one of boxing’s greatest modern fighters.
Among those reacting to the fight was Sidekick Boxing founder Daniel Knight, who shared his thoughts on the matchup and defended both Verhoeven’s performance and the level of elite kickboxers compared to professional boxers.
A large number of fans online argued that Verhoeven may have even been robbed on the scorecards after pushing Usyk far harder than many predicted before the fight. Going into the matchup, most people believed a pure kickboxer would struggle badly against an elite boxer under boxing rules, especially against someone as technically gifted as Usyk.
Instead, Verhoeven surprised many viewers with his movement, composure and ability to compete over multiple rounds against the undisputed heavyweight champion.
Daniel Knight Says Kickboxers Deserve More Respect
Daniel Knight believes the fight exposed a major misconception combat sports fans often have about kickboxers.
“People always believe boxers are better than kickboxers, they have better footwork, movement etc. But the truth is they are just as good and much of the training is the same,” Knight said while discussing the fight.
The comments quickly gained attention because many fans were shocked by how competitive Verhoeven looked inside the ring. While boxing and kickboxing obviously have major differences, Knight argued that high level kickboxers still develop elite timing, movement and striking fundamentals that can translate well into boxing.
Throughout the fight, Verhoeven managed to stay composed under pressure and avoided looking outclassed against one of the most technically skilled heavyweights of this generation.
That performance alone changed opinions for many viewers who originally expected the fight to be completely one sided.
Rico Verhoeven Earns Respect Despite Defeat To Usyk
Even though Usyk officially walked away with the win, much of the conversation after the fight focused on how impressive Verhoeven looked rather than the result itself. Some fans felt the kickboxing champion landed the cleaner shots during key moments and deserved more credit from the judges.
The fight also reopened discussions about crossover matchups between boxing and kickboxing. For years, boxing fans often dismissed the idea that kickboxers could compete under pure boxing rules at the elite level. Verhoeven’s performance challenged that belief in a major way.
Usyk still showed why he is considered one of the smartest and most skilled fighters in combat sports, but the fact that Verhoeven managed to make the fight competitive surprised a huge part of the boxing world.
For Daniel Knight, though, the result was proof of something he already believed. Elite kickboxers belong in the conversation when discussing the best strikers in combat sports, and Rico Verhoeven may have just helped remind people of that.
