The Delhi Capitals (DC) had a disappointing run in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). Once again, the team fell short of making it to the playoffs, extending their wait for their first IPL title. Despite some promising performances, the team couldn’t find the consistency needed to succeed.

Adding to their struggles, DC had to part ways with their star captain Rishabh Pant, who will now enter the IPL 2025 auction pool. While the team retained key players like Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel, their squad still has major gaps. With the IPL 2025 mega auction approaching on November 24 and 25, DC has a lot of work ahead.

Over the years, Delhi hasn’t been known for clever auction strategies, and this time won’t be any different. With several issues to address, the road to rebuilding the team is far from smooth.

Here are the three main challenges DC faces before the IPL 2025 auction.

1. Finding Reliable Death Bowlers

The Arun Jaitley Stadium, DC’s home ground, has turned into a nightmare for bowlers. In IPL 2024, high-scoring matches became common, with short boundaries making it easy for batters to pile on runs.

To compete, DC needs top-quality pace bowlers who can handle the pressure in death overs. Unfortunately, their bowling attack last season lacked firepower. Players like Anrich Nortje, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, and Mitchell Marsh struggled to deliver consistently. Rasikh Salam showed promise but wasn’t retained, leaving the team short on reliable options.

Top Indian pacers like Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj will likely demand massive bids at the auction. While DC has some funds, securing multiple skilled bowlers may still be a challenge.

2. Searching for a New Captain

With Rishabh Pant no longer part of the team, DC is in dire need of a new leader. Pant’s departure has sparked speculation, but his exit leaves a significant void in the team’s core.

Many have suggested that former DC captain Shreyas Iyer could return, but signing him won’t be cheap. Spending a big chunk of their budget on Iyer could leave the team struggling to fill other important gaps.

Finding a captain who is both tactically strong and fits the team’s budget is a tough task for DC. They will need to carefully balance their spending to avoid compromising other areas of the squad.

3. Building the Top and Middle Order

DC’s batting lineup needs a major overhaul. While Tristan Stubbs and Abishek Porel are promising, the team lacks experienced batters for the top and middle orders. Over the past few seasons, DC has lost key players like Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant, leaving a gaping hole in their batting unit.

With most franchises retaining their best Indian players, the competition for quality batters at the auction will be fierce. DC cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of past auctions, where they overrelied on overseas players to carry the batting.

The Road Ahead

The Delhi Capitals have a tough task at hand as they head into the IPL 2025 auction. From finding death bowlers to securing a captain and rebuilding their batting lineup, the team has many issues to resolve. Their performance at the auction will determine if they can finally turn things around in the IPL. Fans will hope that this time, DC gets their strategy right.
