The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced new formats for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 during its Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved the recommendations made by the Chief Executives’ Committee regarding the formats of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The Board includes representatives from both the Full Members and the Associate Members, with three representatives from Associate nations.
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027
The 14th edition of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which is set to begin in 2027, will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, and will be played among 14 nations. Teams that want to get into the Finals have to pass through a new three-stage format leading to the Finals.
- Round 1 – The teams that will be standing in the bottom three of the 14 teams will be qualified for the round-robin Super Series.
- Round 2 – Will consist of 30 matches, and the rest of the 12 teams will be split into two groups of 6-6 teams each. These teams have to play in a round-robin format. The teams that will be standing in the top three from each group will progress into the next Super 7 stage.
- Round 3 – The Super 7 stage will consist of 21 matches. This round of the format will be played in a round-robin format for the top seven teams, and the teams that end up in the top four will qualify for the semi-finals.
The table-toppers will face the fourth-placed team, while the second and third-placed teams will battle it out in the other semi-final.

ICC Men’s T20I Cricket World Cup 2028
The 20-team tournament, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, which will be hosted by one-time T20 World Cup winners Australia and New Zealand, in previous editions the second stage of the tournament used to be played among 8 teams, but from the 2028 edition there will be a Super 10 format, after the upgradation in the format.
- Group Stage – The 30-match contest, consisting of 20 teams, will be split into five groups of four teams each, instead of four groups of five, which existed in the 2026 edition. The top two teams from every group will move on to the Super 10 stage.
- Super 10 Stage – This round will be played between two groups consisting of five teams each, and 20 matches, which will be played in a round-robin format. The teams that win from each group will face each other in the semi-finals, as the winners will directly qualify for the semi-finals.
- Eliminators – The teams that finish at number two and number three from the opposite groups in the Super 10 stage will play in the Eliminators. The two Eliminator matches will be the ticket to the Final. The two remaining spots for the Final will be decided by the Eliminator round.
Qualification Route for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028
The 12 teams, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Zimbabwe, have qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, based on their rankings and their performance in the 10th edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which was held in 2026.
The remaining eight vacant spots for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 will be occupied after the Global Qualifier contest, which will be played among 16 teams. The eight teams are Canada, Italy, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

The remaining eight spots in the Global Qualifier will be filled through the regional qualifiers. Africa, Asia, and Europe will each receive two spots, while the Americas and East Asia-Pacific regions will receive one spot each.
These crucial changes were announced to make the competitive standards higher, strengthen the overall structure of the 50-over World Cup and the 20-over World Cup, and enhance the tournament’s overall experience.
