Saudi Arabia is readying itself for a large-scale entry into franchise cricket via its Dunes League T20 franchise league, launching October 2026.

The league will be Saudi’s inaugural professional T20 franchise league and there is expected to be a significant number of retired professional cricketers coming from outside of Saudi that have recently retired and still competing at the global level on franchise T20 circuits that will be hosting matches there as well.

What is the Dunes League T20?

The Dunes League T20 is an officially recognized franchise cricket competition, and it is jointly organized by the Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation and six participating teams. The first season will take place in Taif, Saudi Arabia.

The Sports Asian Network has collaborated with both Unique Sports Group and Prolithic to create this tournament, and former superstar of Indian cricket, Yuvraj Singh, who has a long-standing association with Prolithic, will be the ambassador of the Dunes T20 League.

Dunes League T20 to Feature International Cricket Stars

The attraction of having retired international players that still compete in franchise cricket around the world will be a huge part of the Dunes League T20.

Countries that have a full membership (member of ICC) can now have a maximum of four players on their roster that played full member cricket in the last two years (International). The Dunes League falls within ICC regulations and will provide access to top-quality international players.

With top international players expected to earn salaries of USD 100,000, the Dunes League will be financially competitive with other developing T20 leagues.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Interest in Cricket

In addition to their overall goal to increase their involvement in sports around the world, the launch of the Dunes League T20 will continue this effort for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

With investments into football, boxing, tennis, golf and motorsports over the last several years as part of economic diversification efforts, Saudi Arabia has made many inroads into cricket with various initiatives through their various initiatives through the launch of the Dunes League T20.

  • The sponsorship deals made with the ICC
  • Hosting the auction of IPL 2024
  • Partnering with the ILT20 League in the UAE
  • Making an agreement for the FairBreak Women’s T20 Challenge

Such initiatives have enabled Saudi Arabia to gain credibility in the world of cricket.

Can Dunes League T20 Compete with Other Franchise Leagues?

The Dunes League T20 will be compared to other tournaments like the IPL, but right now it is primarily concerned with becoming an internationally renowned and sustainable cricket brand.

Past speculation was that Saudi Arabia would introduce a super-sized T20 league that would compete with existing leagues now, however, their current focus seems to be on:

  • Development of Saudi Arabian cricket players
  • Construction of cricket infrastructure
  • Attracting foreign spectators
  • Promotion of franchise cricket in the Middle East

Dunes League T20 and its Importance

The Dunes League T20 can become a milestone in the world of cricket for Saudi Arabia and the whole Gulf region. There has been a substantial amount of investment shown by well-established franchises that could potentially lead to the Dunes League achieving a global reach.

If the Dunes League is successful as planned, it will create many new commercial opportunities for cricket. In addition, Saudi Arabia will be able to use the success of the Dunes League to position itself as a future host country for International Sports Events.
