The second match of the ENG vs IND Test series will be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham from July 2. England won the first match and now lead the series 1-0. Shubman Gill will have the chance to help India make a comeback. But India has never had a good record at this venue.

ENG vs IND Test Series: England Won the First Match

England won the first match of the series. Ben Duckett scored 149 runs and helped England chase a target of 371 runs. Four Indian players scored centuries and Jasprit Bumrah took five wickets, but still India lost the match.

Under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, India gave some good individual performances, but there was a lack of teamwork. The second test is now at Edgbaston, where India has always struggled.

India’s Poor Record at Edgbaston

In the ENG vs IND rivalry, Edgbaston has been one of the toughest grounds for India. Both teams have played eight test matches here. Out of these, India has lost seven and only one match ended in a draw.

India played its first test at Edgbaston in 1967 under captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. England won that match by 132 runs.

In 1974 India lost again by an innings and 78 runs. In 1979, the result was the same. India lost by an innings and 83 runs.

First Draw Came in 1986 but No Win Yet

In 1986 under Kapil Dev’s leadership, India avoided defeat for the first time and the match ended in a draw. In 1996, under Mohammad Azharuddin, India lost again by eight wickets.

In 2011 with MS Dhoni as captain, India suffered its biggest loss at Edgbaston. England won the match by an innings and 242 runs.

In 2018 Virat Kohli’s team fought well in the opening test, but still lost by 31 runs.

More Pain in 2022 at Edgbaston

The fifth test was rescheduled and played in July at Edgbaston during India’s 2022 tour. Rohit Sharma was not available and Jasprit Bumrah led the team. India did well in the first innings but failed to defend 378 runs in the second innings. England won by seven wickets.

ENG vs IND: Can Shubman Gill Break the Edgbaston Jinx?

Now that the second test of ENG vs IND will be played at Edgbaston, all eyes are on whether Shubman Gill’s team can change the history. India has never won a test match at this ground. The team has a chance to gain momentum again, but the pressure is also very high.

If India wants to stay in the series, they must break the bad record at Edgbaston. Both teams have already started preparing for the match. It will be interesting to see if India can finally win a test match at Edgbaston or not.
