The first ODI match of India’s tour to England 2026 was held at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The opening ODI clash began at 3:30 PM IST and 11:00 AM local time.
After the recent loss in the T20Is, India will look to make a comeback, whereas England will look to carry their ferocious form forward. The match began with England winning the toss and electing to bat first, as the pitch gets slower later in the second innings.

The England vs India clash saw, after a wait of 968 days for fans, Jasprit Bumrah finally being seen playing a One Day International match. The first over of Bumrah conceded 4 runs, as both English openers, Ben Duckett, played his first five balls with patience and got a fine boundary on the last delivery.
Duckett and Bethell kept calm for the first 7 overs. In the 8th over, Gurnoor Brar was charged by Ben Duckett and took out 17 runs from his first over of the spell. The intent was clear to put pressure on the young bowler and play the other pacers with a defensive approach. After 10 overs, England were at 51/0.
Fourth seamer Shivam Dube and spinner Washington Sundar came into the attack, and in the 13th over, Gurnoor Brar brought the first breakthrough for the team by dismissing Jacob Bethell and making him catch out. He scored 14(31).

In just 4,605 deliveries, he struck 150 wickets and stands in the top three with Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav. In the 17th over, Prasidh Krishna dismissed two English batters, Sam Curran and Jos Buttler.
Both the batters, if they had stayed on the crease, could have become dangerous, and Krishna struck two of the most important wickets of the innings. In the phase from the 11th to the 20th over, the hosts could only take 42 runs and lost 5 wickets. The overall score stood at 93/5.

In the 22nd over, Will Jacks, playing a back-of-the-length ball, got an edge, and KL Rahul did a great job behind the stumps as Shivam Dube got his first wicket of the match. Joe Root came to the crease, and Liam Dawson at the other end needed to make a partnership; otherwise, things could become slightly difficult for England, as the score was at 108/6.

Joe Root made another prestigious record of scoring consecutive 50+ scores in his last four ODIs, and Liam Dawson scored a convincing 68(83). It was Dawson’s maiden fifty in the ODI format, which came at the most important time.
The partnership ended in the 44th over when Axar Patel trapped Liam Dawson on a flighted delivery, and he gave a catch to Rohit Sharma at deep backward square leg. After Dawson’s wicket, the hosts couldn’t score many runs, and wickets kept on falling.
Joe Root remained not out on 76(76) and played a pivotal knock, helping England reach a fighting total of 258 in 47.5 overs. The target for the visitors will be 259 in 50 overs.
