The opening ODI match of the series was held at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on 14th July 2026. India registered a comeback by winning the match by 6 wickets. At a score of 108/6, Joe Root and Liam Dawson rescued their team by scoring an important partnership of 121 runs in 134 balls. Joe Root etched the record of scoring consecutive 50+ scores in his last four ODIs, and Liam Dawson scored his maiden ODI fifty.
Their partnership came for the hosts during a pivotal phase, and in 47.5 overs, England were bowled out for the score of 258, and Joe Root’s convincing innings of 76 (76) led the hosts to this score.
The second innings of the match began with the visitors needing 259 runs in 50 overs, at a required run rate of 5.18 runs per over. In the powerplay, Team India lost the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma. In the 8th over, Sam Curran’s outside-off delivery trapped Rohit, and he ended up giving a catch to Harry Brook.
Then the second breakthrough came in the form of Virat Kohli. On Jofra Archer’s delivery, Kohli shuffled and tried to hit a flick shot but ended up getting LBW. The first 10 overs of the innings were in favour of England as they struck two big wickets.
Shubman Gill, the captain, and Shreyas Iyer both took the innings further with a calm and steady approach but also scored runs from loose deliveries. In 19.4 overs, Gill reached his fifty by hitting a four to Sam Curran, and in the phase of 11 to 20 overs, Team India didn’t lose any wickets and reached a score of 110/2.
In the 26th over, Gill suffered from his leg injury again, and he moved back to the pavilion, retired hurt. Washington Sundar came out to bat, and Gill’s innings of 101* (103) ended.
