Once again, Chelsea’s transfer activity is raising eyebrows across the Premier League.
Enzo Maresca has spent heavily on bringing in several attackers and midfielders to his squad this summer, as well as offloading a list of attackers. Indeed, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro and Estevao have all arrived at Stamford Bridge.
While Chelsea’s attacking options are certainly viewed as one of the strongest in the top flight, Maresca is still pushing to sign another defender before the transfer window closes.
The Italian is after defenders who are comfortable in possession and can step into the midfield whenever necessary.
At the moment, Chelsea are top heavy and this might come back to haunt Maresca later in the season if his defence is not improved soon.
Resources such as football tipsters on FIRST.com can allow bettors and fans to anticipate how Chelsea’s business in the transfer window will impact results as the season goes on.
If Maresca wishes to lead Chelsea to the latter stages of the Champions League and challenge for the Premier League title, signing another defender in the next two weeks is imperative.
Chelsea must sign another defender
Since the former Leicester City manager took the reins at Chelsea last summer, his injury problems have arguably prevented the club from reaching their peak.
The likes of Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana, Reece James and Benoit Badiashile missed large section of the 2024/25 campaign due to injury issues. This left the Blues short at the back on several occasions.
Across their 64 competitive matches last season, including the Club World Cup, Chelsea conceded 64 goals. A grand total of 43 of these came in the Premier League.
Maresca was rocked by the news that Levi Colwill rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament during pre-season, meaning he will miss the majority of the 2025/26 season.
As such, the Italian must dive back into the transfer market in a bid to sign a replacement. The question is, will the manager be backed? Especially considering he has already spent £246.1m this summer.
Will Chelsea end the transfer window on a high note?
Mamadou Sarr and Jorrel Hato are the only two defensive recruitments by Chelsea so far during the transfer window.
Both players are exciting talents who will surely only improve at Stamford Bridge, but some experience is required.
One player who has been linked recently is Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie. The Ecuadorian international may only be 23, but he has won 46 caps for his country while winning the Bundesliga title and starring in the Champions League.
Elsewhere, Chelsea are also big admirers of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The defender played well against the Blues during the 0-0 draw between the clubs on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
Given his experience in the top flight, plus the fact he is approaching te peak years of his career, Maresca would be wise to make a move for the Englishman.
The opening day stalemate proved that Chelsea are still raw in attack, despite their summer splurge, while the defence could do with some added reinforcements given Trevor Chalobah partnered teenager Josh Acheampong at the back.
With the summer transfer window closing on September 1, meaning Maresca has little time to bring in another defender or two.
It could be an interesting time ahead for the Stamford Bridge faithful. Should they sign Guehi or Hincapie, the Blues will be tough to beat.
If not, Maresca must pray the club don’t suffer any more injuries.
