Footballers with most assists in a calendar year

Thierry Henry, 31 (2003)

Lionel Messi, 31 (2006)

In 2016, Lionel Messi registered 59 goals and 31 assists while averaging 90 minutes for each goal. But the startling fact is that it took him, on average, just 59 minutes to contribute to a goal. He made 51 games for Barcelona during that season, contributing 25 assists, with the remaining 6 coming in Argentinian colors.

Dusan Tadic, 34 (2019)

He is firmly establishing himself as the uncontested assist king of the Eredivisie, having long ago moved over his comparatively chilly Southampton days. Tadic, who is regarded as the best player outside of Europe’s top five divisions, had a standout season in the 2018–19 UEFA Champions League, with 10 assists. That year, the Serbian playmaker-forward helped Ajax upset Real Madrid and Juventus en route to the UEFA Champions League semi finals. He was the leading assist provider in Europe that season with 34 total assists in a single calendar year.

Lionel Messi, 37 (2011)

It is highly likely that this small Rosario wizard will have no trouble providing 36 assists in a single calendar year if he can score 91 goals in a single year. In 57 of his appearances for the Blaugranas throughout his 70 games that year, he provided 28 assists. For Argentina, where he also scored 4 goals, he provided the remaining 9 assists.

Dusan Tadic, 38 (2021)

It is extremely unlikely that Messi’s record will ever be surpassed in any area of a football pitch. Two seasons later, Dusan Tadic topped his previous best effort with 34 assists. securing the Eredivisie and leading the Dutch team Ajax to yet another domestic triumph. Tadic received the distinction of winning Dutch Footballer of the Year that year. Erik Ten Hag used him occasionally as a false nine after originally playing him out wide and alternating with the number 10 spot.
