Grand Prix 2026: In a significant alteration to their Formula 1 schedule for 2026, The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has now formally cancelled every scheduled Grand Prix event due in April 2026. The cancellation took place on the date of March 13th, 2026 and occurred as a consequence of an increase in geopolitical issues occurring in the Middle East.

The races that have been cancelled are the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which are two major events in the Formula One World Championship.

According to the FIA, the cancellation of these races is for the safety of everyone involved in these events, given the unstable state of affairs in the Middle East region.

Security Situation Forces Cancellation of April Grand Prix

The decision to cancel these two Grand Prix races was based on the deteriorating security situation in these areas where these two races were to be held.

The Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix are two of the major events that are expected to take place during the initial stages of this Formula 1 season.

However, considering that the Middle East is experiencing increased tension, the FIA has decided that these two races could pose some risk of danger to participants and spectators of this international motorsport event. By canceling these two races, the Formula 1 authorities are seeking to prevent any last-minute cancellations that could be very disruptive.

Shipping and Freight Timelines Impacted the Choice Made

Aside from concerns over security it was also logistics that played a significant role in deciding to not hold the April 2026 race series. The Formula One Teams rely heavily on freight shipping to transport their cars, equipment and technical gear to and from various locations.

The FIA has a strict shipping deadline that must be observed by March 20, 2026. This ensures that all racing equipment is delivered on time for the next event.

The Japanese event was scheduled for March 29, 2026. This was a problem since there was insufficient time for the safe movement of equipment from Japan to the Middle East and back.

The fact that freight movement was already restricted in the first place meant that it was not possible for the races scheduled for April 2026 to take place.

Five-Week Gap Added to the 2026 Formula 1 Calendar

After these cancellations, the 2026 Formula 1 season will have a rare five-week gap between races. The season will shift from the Japanese GP on March 29th to the Miami GP on May 3rd, 2026, which is in the United States. A break this long during the active season is unusual for Formula 1 it usually happens during a summer or winter break.

2026 Formula 1 Season Reduced to 22 Races

This means that the 2026 Formula One season will now be comprised of 22 races instead of 24, considering that two of the April Grand Prix events are removed from the schedule.

At this point, it is not expected that any replacement races or sprint events will be added to the schedule, but it is possible that other locations could be considered for future seasons if these regional issues continue beyond 2026.

Championship Battle Could Intensify With Fewer Grand Prix

The reduced number of Grand Prix races may also ensure that the 2026 championship race is even more competitive. The 2026 championship race was already kicked off by an intense battle between Ferrari and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team at the Australian Grand Prix.

The reduced number of races may ensure that every Grand Prix race is important for determining the 2026 Formula One World Championship title winner.
