One of the more interesting group stage games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup features France vs Senegal. The two sides meet in Group I on Wednesday, June 17, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This is a game that carries history, expectation and a head-to-head record that will surprise many football fans.

France: Hunting History at World Cup 2026

France is among the favourites going into this tournament. The Bleus have been a powerhouse on the world stage for the last decade, and their recent World Cup record speaks for itself.

They won the trophy in Russia in 2018, beating Croatia 4-2 in the final. Four years later in Qatar, France reached the final again but lost to Argentina on penalties after a 3-3 draw in one of the most memorable finals in World Cup history. Now, in the 2026 edition, co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, France are aiming to become only the second team in history to reach three consecutive World Cup finals.

Kylian Mbappé and his team-mates are real contenders for the title in this tournament. A perfect start would be a win in their opening group game against Senegal.

Senegal: Hoping to go deep again

Senegal are one of the best sides in Africa ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The Lions of Teranga are the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions and boast a squad full of quality from top European clubs, including Sadio Mané and a strong supporting cast.

Their best showing was in 2002 in South Korea and Japan, and they have not progressed beyond the quarter-finals. Aliou Cisse’s men will hope to get beyond that stage and progress further in the tournament.

They might not be the team to win the whole thing, but Senegal is certainly capable of being a thorn in the side of any team, including France.

France vs Senegal Head-to-Head Record

Before this match, France and Senegal have met three times in total. What stands out is that Senegal actually has the better record between the two sides.

  • Total meetings: 3
  • France wins: 1
  • Draws: 0
  • Senegal wins: 2

That means going into the 2026 World Cup, Senegal lead the all-time head-to-head against France. Many fans will find this surprising given how dominant France have been in world football, but the numbers are accurate.

The 2002 World Cup Upset

The most famous meeting between these two countries came at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. France entered that tournament as defending world champions, having won the 1998 edition on home soil. They were placed in the same group as Senegal, a side many expected them to beat comfortably.

Instead, Senegal produced one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history. Papa Bouba Diop scored the only goal of the game in the 30th minute, and Senegal held on for a 1-0 win. France never managed to recover from that result. They drew both of their remaining group games without scoring a single goal and were eliminated at the group stage an extraordinary fall for the reigning champions.

That result remains one of the most talked-about upsets in World Cup history. Diop, who passed away in 2020, is remembered as a hero in Senegalese football for that goal.

Earlier Meetings Between the Two Nations

The two other meetings between France and Senegal came in far less competitive settings. In June 1956, France visited Dakar for a friendly match and won 9-2, a comfortable and emphatic victory. That game was played at a time when Senegal was still a French territory, so the context was entirely different to modern international football.

Seven years later, in April 1963, a different Senegal side hosted an amateur France team in the African Friendship Games. This time, Senegal won 2-0. It was a historically significant match because it came shortly after Senegal had gained independence from France in 1960. Senegal’s win in that game held symbolic importance for the country.

The result means France has won just one of the three meetings so far, the 1956 friendly. They have never beaten Senegal in a competitive fixture.

Last Three Meetings

June 17, 1956: Senegal 2-9 France (Friendly, Dakar)

April 19, 1963: Senegal 2-0 France (Friendly/African Friendship Games, Dakar)

May 31, 2002: France 0-1 Senegal (FIFA World Cup Group Stage)

Both teams are aiming for success from the group stage, and a win here would give either side a strong platform to build on. The head-to-head record adds an interesting level of storyline to what is already a thrilling match.
