GTA 6 is coming soon and honestly, everyone is talking about the game everywhere. But if you are a gamer in Australia, there is a good chance you would not just be able to start the game and jump straight into Vice City. first you have to confirm your age.
Yes, i am serious. Australia has given a new law and it could mean rockstar has to check IDs before people play this game.
So what’s actually going on?
Australia came up with the Age-Restricted Material Code in 2026. This law is simple. It says that any website or platform that has R18+ content must make sure the person using it is actually an adult. You can not just click “I am 18”. Keep going.
The thing about Grand Theft Auto 6 is that it does not have a rating in Australia yet. But let us be real we all know what is going to happen. Grand Theft Auto 5 got an R18+ rating in Australia. Grand Theft Auto games are always crazy. So there is no chance Grand Theft Auto 6 will not get that rating. If a game gets an M rating from the ESRB in the United States or an 18+ rating from PEGI in Europe it will probably get an R18+ rating, in Australia too. When that happens the Age-Restricted Material Code law kicks in. The Age-Restricted Material Code law will affect Grand Theft Auto 6 because it will likely have R18+ content.
The fine is not a joke
If Rockstar does not follow the rules the penalty is very severe. The company could be fined up to AU$49.5 million for each breach. This is $35 million in US dollars. This is not a one-time fine it is for each breach. So if Rockstar keeps making the mistake the fines will just keep adding up.
For a company, like Rockstar or its parent company Take-Two this amount of money will not put them out of business. It is still a lot of money that they do not want to pay especially when they can avoid it by using the right verification system for Rockstar. Rockstar can prevent this by putting the system in place to verify things.
Single player, online, or both?
Here’s where things get a little unclear. Nobody really knows if this age check will apply to GTA 6s mode, the story campaign or the whole game. Rockstar has not said anything about it.
That being said we do have an idea of what this could look like. GTA Online, which is part of GTA 5 already makes players in Australia verify their ID. So it’s not surprising if something similar happens with GTA 6s mode. GTA 6s mode might have an age check.
Don’t worry, verifying your age doesn’t mean you have to upload your drivers license to Rockstars servers. Many platforms use companies to check your age so you might not have to give your ID directly to Rockstar. There could be a middleman system, in place instead.
GTA 6 will likely have some kind of age verification. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed it yet. The game is expected to have a mode. GTA 6 is going to have a lot of features including a mode.
GTA Online already requires ID verification in Australia.
Rockstar will probably make an announcement about it soon.
What this means for players
If you are an adult gamer in Australia this will not ruin your Grand Theft Auto 6 experience. It just means you might have to do something before you can play Grand Theft Auto 6. This is like when you have to verify your age to buy something on the internet. Is this annoying? Maybe it is a little annoying. It is not a big problem.
The big question is how this rule will be only for GTA 6 there is many more game but there is only one law about this game.
When is GTA 6 actually dropping?
Gamers, mark your calendars because GTA 6 is coming on November 19, 2026. As that date gets near rockstar plan more details to come out about this Australian age verification requirement with any other regional rules they need to follow.
For now Australian gamers should just go in expecting some kind of age check, even if they are planning on diving into the online side of the game.
