Here are some of the brothers who have played together in cricket

5 Min Read

The Australian cricket set-up has seen many brothers who have represented them in International cricket. The trio of Chappell brothers were very successful during their era while the Waugh twins brought a lot of glory in international cricket. In the recent past there have been the Lee brothers and the Hussey brothers. The latest addition to this list were Marsh brothers. The Pakistan team had the Akmal brothers while England currently has Sam and Tom Curran. India has also seen famous brothers who have represented them like the Amarnath brothers, Pathan brothers and in the current era it has been the Pandya brothers.

Here are some of the famous and successful brother pairs to have played international cricket.

Pathan brothers

The Pathan brothers (Irfan and Yusuf) came out from many hardships to represent India. The more successful of the two was Irfan. He was even dubbed India’s future Kapil Dev after a stellar start to his international career. When he made his debut as a 19-year-old during the 2003–2004 tour of Australia, his pace had an effect. In fact, he took a hat-trick in the opening over of the 2006 Test in Karachi. In both the 2008 Perth Test against Australia and the 2007 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan, he was named Player of the Match. Irfan, finished his career with 173 kills in 120 ODIs and 100 wickets in 29 Tests. Also, he received a Test 100.

Yusuf briefly served as a dependable middle-order player for India in white-ball cricket. He played in 22 T20Is and 57 ODIs for his nation. Yusuf, a powerful hitter, scored two outstanding one-day hundreds, one against South Africa and one against New Zealand. He, just like his brother, was an all-rounder and  a useful off-spinner to the side.

The Pathan brothers are one of the only two brothers who have been part of an ICC World Cup finals together. In 2007 they both were part of the Indian squad that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa.

Waugh twins

Unquestionably, the best brother duo to ever play the game was Steve and Mark Waugh. The twins, who between them amassed more than 18000 Test runs and 52 hundreds, were crucial to Australia’s dominance in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

When Mark Waugh made his Test debut, Steve Waugh already had 42 appearances under his belt and had shown his value as a seam all-rounder. Unfortunately, Steve was removed during the 1990–91 season due to a significant decline in performance. Weirdly, Steve’s twin brother took his position in the lineup.

The pair eventually became a staple in the Australian lineup and appeared in an incredible 108 Tests together. In 40 of those games, Mark’s twin brother served as the captain.

Chappell brothers

One of the most infamous moments in cricket history is when in an ODI in 1981, captain Greg Chappell told his younger brother Trevor to bowl under-arm to thwart New Zealand’s effort to score six runs off the last ball. Ian, Greg’s older brother, overcame the bond between them and denounced the act on commentary.

However, each of the three brothers played international cricket for Australia. Greg made a name for himself as one of the greatest batsmen of all time, whilst Ian was known for being a superb tactician. Together, they participated in 43 Test matches, with Australia winning up to 22 of them. Trevor, on the other hand, could only manage three outings in white.
