Badminton has undergone unparalleled growth in popularity in India in recent years, owing mostly to the development of worldwide superstars such as Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, and others. However, India’s link with badminton dates back far further, even to ancient times. Indeed, India played a significant influence in badminton’s rise to global prominence. Badminton dates back to over two thousand years. However, badminton as a sport was barely recognized as an Olympic sport.

India has produced numerous badminton superstars like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, and Kidambi Srikanth over the previous decade and continues to do so.

  • PV Sindhu

The 28-year-old Indian gem from Hyderabad is ranked 17th position in worldwide rankings. Sindhu is coached by former South Korean player Park Tae-sang.

Sindhu has won two medals at the world’s largest sporting event. Her first Olympic medal came in 2016 when she took silver in Rio. She continued to thrive at the Olympics, gaining bronze in Tokyo 2020. She also won back-to-back gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022. Her most recent World Championship victory came in 2019 when she won gold in Basel.

  • Saina Nehwal

Saina Nehwal is the first badminton player who clinched an Olympic medal. Saina has won 24 international titles to date. Ten of the 24 are superseries titles. Saina is a prominent athlete who contributed significant improvements to the reputation of badminton in the country.

  • Aakarshi Kashyap

Aakarshi Kashyap who is a former badminton player from India, won a Gold medal in the South Asian Games held in 2019 in Kathmandu, Nepal. This 22-year girl represented India at Asia U-15 and U-17 junior championships held in Indonesia. Kashyap achieved a Bronze medal in that. 

  • Malvika Bansod

One name that stands out as one to watch is Nagpur. Malvika Bansod was born in India’s orange city. The 20-year-old singles specialist debuted on the circuit in 2019 and has already made a name for herself, most notably by defeating Saina. Malvika is the only Indian woman after Sindhuto defeats Saina.

The Assam shuttler Ashmita clinched the women’s singles with a contrasting victory at the Maldives International Challenge. After coming back from a game down, third-seeded Ashmita overcame fellow Indian Tasnim Mir by scores of 19-21, 21-17, and 21-11.

The 17-year-old Indian shuttler was awarded for her outstanding performance in three junior international competitions last year, which allowed her to move three positions to the top of the junior world rankings.

  • Tanya Hemanth

The spark of Karnataka clinched the women’s singles title at the Iran FajrInternational Challenge badminton tournament in Tehran on Sunday but had to put on a headscarf before collecting her Gold medal. 

  • Gadde Ruthvika Shivani

In 2015, before her serious illness, Gadde had won the women’s singles tournament in the Vijayawada Nationals. A year later, she overcame PV Sindhu, the eventual world champion, in the South Asian Games final. Apart from Saina Nehwal, Gadde is the only Indian player to have beaten the two-time Olympic medalist.

An 18-year-old Indian badminton player has reached world number one in the BWF World Junior Rankings in women’s singles. Anupama began playing badminton during a summer vacation to Almora, a lovely hill resort in Uttarakhand. Anupama, who was nine at the time, used to walk down the hill to the Sunder Lal Bahuguna Indoor Badminton Stadium.

  • Ira Sharma

Ira Sharma is a promising young star who ranks tenth on this list. At the age of 22, she is rated 94th in the world, slightly ahead of two Indian competitors.
