Alexandrova, the world number eleven player, was two points from capturing the championship, but Swiatek fought back to square the match after a tiebreak, then settled into a groove in the third set.

The third set was another narrow affair but the former world number one sealed the match with her brilliance.

“Honestly, I don’t know how I won it, because you were just playing great. I just tried to stay alive,” Swiatek said.

“I’m happy that I could win here because of the family history,” she said. “My dad couldn’t win the Olympics [here], but at least I won this tournament. So hopefully he’s going to come next year to enjoy everything,” she added.

With the victory, the six-time Grand Slam winner from Poland won her Korea Open title and her third trophy of the season.
