The Los Santos Red mod is one of the most exciting GTA 5 mods for players who want to make the game feel more alive. It improves how the police, gangs, and civilians react to your actions, while also adding new stores, places, and interactions. You can even switch characters and play as any pedestrian you see on the street, making GTA 5 feel like a whole new game.
This guide will explain step by step how to download, install, and run the Los Santos Red mod in GTA 5. The mod only works with the GTA 5 Legacy edition, so keep that in mind before starting.
Step 1: Download Los Santos Red Mod
- Go to the official GitHub page of Los Santos Red.
- Open the Releases section and download the latest version available.
- After downloading the zip file, extract it.
- Copy the Plugins folder into your GTA 5 root directory.
- Keep the NA Audio files aside for later setup.
Step 2: Install RAGE Plugin Hook and RAGENativeUI
This mod will not work without RAGE Plugin Hook and RAGENativeUI.
- Join the official RAGE Discord and download the latest RAGE Plugin Hook file for GTA 5.
- Go to the RAGENativeUI GitHub page and download the newest version.
- Unzip both files and move their contents into your GTA 5 root folder.
- Run the RagePluginHook.exe once. When the settings window appears, close it after the setup is complete.
Step 3: Download Extra Technical Files
To prevent errors and crashes, you need a few more tools:
- OpenIV (essential for modding file placement)
- Gameconfig (fixes loading issues with large mods)
- Packfile Limit Adjuster (prevents memory crashes)
- Heap Adjuster (stabilizes game performance)
Download each of these from their official modding sites. They are small but necessary for Los Santos Red to work smoothly.
Step 4: Set Up Mods with OpenIV
- Open OpenIV and select GTA 5 (Windows).
- Allow it to read your files, then enable Edit Mode at the top.
- Go to ASI Manager and install the three tools that appear.
- Copy the Packfile Limit Adjuster, Heap Adjuster, and NA Audio files into the Los Santos Red folder.
- For Gameconfig:
- Open the update folder in OpenIV.
- Select update.rpf. When asked, copy it to the mods folder.
- Inside common > data, replace the Gameconfig file with the one you downloaded.
Step 5: Configure RAGE Plugin Hook and Disable BattleEye
- Disable BattleEye Anti-Cheat from Rockstar Launcher settings.
- Go back to your GTA 5 directory and run RagePluginHook.exe.
- Quickly open the settings window before the game launches.
- Under Plugins, check the box that says Load these plugins on startup and select Los Santos Red.
- Click Save and Launch to start GTA 5 with the mod activated.
