Former New Zealand cricketer Ian Smith has expressed disappointment and disapproval towards Cricket South Africa (CSA) for naming a ‘weakened’ Test team slated for the upcoming two-match tour of New Zealand in February. The squad, captained by opener Neil Brand, includes seven uncapped players out of the 14-man lineup, a move heavily criticized by Smith.

Expressing his discontent on SEN Radio, Ian Smith mentioned, “We have always held high regard for South African sporting prowess, but this decision feels like a letdown, especially considering our proud sporting history. It’s disappointing for us at this time.”

The CSA’s squad for the New Zealand tour includes Test players David Bedingham, Zubayr Hamza, and Keegan Petersen, alongside other experienced names such as Khaya Zondo, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, and Dane Piedt. Notably absent are frontline Test players due to their commitment to the second season of the SA20 league at home, leading to a depleted national squad.

Responding to widespread criticism, the CSA Board clarified that the scheduling conflicts between the Test series and the SA20 league compelled the selection of a weakened Test squad for this particular tour. The Board reassured fans of their respect for the Test format as the pinnacle of the sport.

“The clash arose due to scheduling determined by the Future Tours Programme (FTP) for 2023-2027 before the SA20 window was finalized. Efforts were made to reschedule, but global cricket calendar constraints hindered rearrangement,” stated the CSA Board.

Despite the controversy, CSA praised Head Coach Shukri Conrad and the selected players for their preparation and expressed confidence in their ability to represent the Proteas badge with honor during the tour. The Board reiterated their commitment to international cricket and the SA20 tournament, emphasizing future scheduling to avoid further conflicts.
