The latest ICC ODI rankings, released on Wednesday, caused quite a stir in the cricket world. Fans were shocked to see that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were missing from the list.
ICC Rankings: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Missing Was Just a Glitch
Since both legends – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma – have already retired from Tests and T20Is, and ODIs are the only format they still play, their absence immediately sparked speculation online. Many wondered if this meant they were stepping away from ODIs too.
However, the ICC later cleared the air. It turned out to be nothing more than a technical error. “A number of issues in this week’s rankings are currently being investigated,” the ICC told Wisden. Soon after, both names were added back, with Rohit Sharma ranked No. 2 and Virat Kohli at No. 4.
Kuldeep Slips, Maharaj Back on Top
In the bowlers’ rankings, India’s Kuldeep Yadav dropped to third place. South African spinner Keshav Maharaj climbed back to the No. 1 spot after a brilliant performance against Australia. Maharaj picked up 5 for 33 in the first ODI in Cairns, helping South Africa win by 98 runs and earning the Player of the Match award.
The 35-year-old left-arm spinner had briefly held the top spot in November and December 2023 and has now reclaimed it by moving past Kuldeep and Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana.
Among Indians, only Ravindra Jadeja joins Kuldeep in the top 10 of the bowlers’ rankings. It’s worth noting that India has not played an ODI since winning the Champions Trophy.
Big Movers in the Rankings
Elsewhere, West Indies pacer Jayden Seales made a big leap, jumping 15 places to 18th after his incredible spell of 6 for 18 against Pakistan in their series decider.
Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed also moved up 15 spots to joint-39th, while West Indies’ Roston Chase climbed to 58th.
Shubman Gill Still on Top
On the batting side, Shubman Gill continues to lead the ICC ODI rankings with 784 points. Shreyas Iyer is the other Indian in the top 10, sitting at eighth.
