India defeated Pakistan on February 15 in a high-profile match of the 2015 Cricket World Cup. The Indians continued their unbeaten streak against their bitter rivals, improving their World Cup head-to-head record to 6-0 in their favour. This isn’t the best head-to-head record in World Cup history for a team against a specific opponent, though. The World Cup is currently in its 11th year, and numerous records have already been broken. In the next slides, we examine all the longest streaks in World Cup history, including the most consecutive tons, the longest winning and unbeaten streaks, as well as dubious accolades like the most consecutive ducks and losing streaks:

Record First Second
Most consecutive wins   Australia (1999–2011) 27 India (2011–2015) 11
Most Wins (Total)   Australia 69 New Zealand 54

Most Defeats (Total)   Zimbabwe 42 Sri Lanka 39

#1 Longest Winning Streak Australia (25 matches)

Starting in 1999, the powerful Australian teams captained by Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting dominated world cricket. Between 1999 and 2011, the team went on a 25-game winning streak. The run began in the 1999 World Cup final, where Australia defeated Pakistan by 8 wickets to win the championship after tying South Africa in the semi-final. Following their victory, the Australian team completely dominated the international competition for the following ten years, winning every match they participated in in the World Cups of 2003 and 2007.

The squad maintained its winning streak in 2011 as well, defeating Zimbabwe and New Zealand in the opening two games before the game against Sri Lanka was called off due to rain, ending the team’s string of 25 straight victories.

#2 Longest Unbeaten Streak Australia (34 matches)

Along with the winning record of 25, the Australians also had a 34-match unbeaten stretch between 1999 and 2011, winning 32 of those games (with one tie – against South Africa in 1999 and one no-result – against Sri Lanka in 2011).

After the Aussies suffered back-to-back defeats to New Zealand and Pakistan in 1999, which raised the possibility of an early exit, they rallied to defeat Bangladesh and then went on to win all of their subsequent games to get to the semi-finals. The winning streak was ended by a record tie with South Africa, although Australia still advanced to the championship game since they placed higher than the Proteas in the Super Six.

The winning streak of 25 games began in the final and ended in the game versus Sri Lanka due to rain. After that game, Australia won two more games before Pakistan defeated them by four wickets to halt the Kangaroos’ 35-game winning streak.

#3 Longest Losing Streak Zimbabwe (18 matches)

In 1983, Zimbabwe had a fantastic World Cup debut, defeating the dominant Australians by 13 runs to cause a major upset. The team, however, had to wait over 9 years for their subsequent World Cup victory, and they went on a losing streak of 18 games.

The first time was in 1983 when they had India down 17-5 before a magnificent knock of 175* by Kapil Dev changed the outcome of the game. The second time was in 1992 when debutant Andy Flower’s century against Sri Lanka helped his side score 312, but the Lankans easily chased down the challenging target. In the 1992 World Cup, Zimbabwe defeated England in a low-scoring thriller, with Eddo Brandes playing a key role and taking 4 wickets. The losing streak was finally broken.
