The IIHF Women’s World Championship 2025 is set to take place in Czechia. The city of České Budějovice near the Austrian border will play host to the world’s top 10 women’s teams from 9–20 April 2025.
Canada will be the team to watch out for as they will be looking to extend their ice hockey women’s world title record by clinching their 14th title.
After suffering a shock defeat to USA in 2023 in the gold-medal match on home ice, they avenged the loss last year in New York by defeating the Americans 6–5 in overtime .
The Maple Leaves are now looking to register back-to-back wins at the championship.
Ever since the conception of the tournament in 1990, 23 editions of the championship have been held. Canada has emerged as the most successful country with 13 world titles. They are one of the only three countries other than the USA and Finland to have ever made it to the gold-medal game at the IIHF Women’s World Championship.
Canada and the U.S. have won a medal at every Women’s World Championship since the tournament’s inception in 1990.
The stage is now set for yet another Canada–USA rivalry in Czechia this year.
Canada has fielded a strong squad of 25 members including 18 champions from the 2024 gold-winning contingent. They have five new faces, and will be led once more by captain Marie-Philip Poulin, with alternate captains Renata Fast, Brianne Jenner, Jocelyne Larocque, and Blayre Turnbull all also returning. Olympic history-maker Sarah Nurse is also on the squad.
