Today is the first match of India in the T20 World Cup. The thing to watch will be who will open with captain Rohit Sharma—Virat Kohli or the youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal. Till now, Virat Kohli has opened with Rohit in only one T20 international match; he only opens in the IPL.
Virat Kohli has been criticized many times for his slow strike rate, but he improved his strike rate quite a bit by the end of the IPL. On the other hand, Yashavi Jaiswal usually opens the innings, but his form has not been so good.
Virat Kohli vs. Yashasvi Jaiswal: A Battle for the Opener’s Slot
In this opener’s battle, Virat Kohli is more capable of opening; he has the experience and a good record of opening in the IPL. Yashasvi Jaiswal also has experience opening in the IPL, but the pressure of the T20 World Cup is different. His form is also not supporting him, and he has also scored a century in the IPL.
Virat Kohli has scored 741 runs in his 15 matches, at a strike rate of 154.69, which includes 5 half-centuries and 1 century. Similarly, Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored 435 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 155, which includes 1 half-century and 1 century.
IPL Form vs. T20 International Record: Picking the Right Fit
Yashasvi Jaiswal made his debut in the Indian Premier League in the year 2020 and impressed everyone with his batting prowess and power-hitting skills. All thanks to his brilliant performances, he gained a place in the Indian team.
So far, he has amassed 1607 runs in just 52 IPL matches, of which his highest score is 124 runs. He has scored runs at a strike rate above 150 in his IPL career. On the other hand, Virat Kohli is breaking record after record, he has a lot of experience in playing the game according to the situation. Considering that this is the first match of the Indian side, the team can open with Virat as his recent form is quite good.
Will Virat Kohli open? Sunil Gavaskar Slams Virat
The former Indian batsman, Sunil Gavaskar, has always criticized Virat Kohli regarding his slow strike and shot selection. However, he has now backed Virat Kohli to open with Rohit Sharma in the T20 World Cup.
Gavaskar said: “Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as openers. The way Kohli has batted, particularly the second half of the IPL, he deserves to open the batting with Rohit Sharma, the captain. Seriously, good players are good players. They can bat anywhere, you know whether they’re right and left hand.”
He added: “So no, I don’t think. It’s very good to talk on television about left hand-right hand combination, good players are good players. In Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, you have got 2 terrific and 2 fantastic batters. The kind of form Kohli has shown in the IPL, he has to open the batting.”
Former captain Saurav Ganguly said Virat Kohli should open the innings for team India in the T20 World Cup as he can play the anchor’s role for Rohit Sharma, who is known for his power-hitting performances and is capable of scoring a century in 40 balls, similar to Travis Head.

After this match, Team India will face their arch-rival Pakistan on the same ground on 9th June.
